The two best commands for oral issues are "Release" and "Leave it" Use with a firm NO for things they shouldn't have and positive reinforcement when they do right. It also helps to have rawhide or chew toys around that they learn are theirs to distract them from what they shouldn't have.

The pup has done training school, but she is so sneaky
she will obey all commands , when we give them to her, but when our back is turned off she goes, and you can only reinforce a behaviour when they are doin it.
She is my sisters dog and is 2.5yrs old, my sister has another dog who is 16yrs old, (with dementia and cancer but still going strong) my dog is 7yrs old sheperd/husky, (grew up with security dogs so very well trained), so a lot bigger than the pup and more dominant, keeps the pup in line, but she is trying to move her way up the pack with the 16yr old getting slower, and we think she is feeling either negliected or frustrated, so she takes it out on our stuff (more my sister stuff as I am a lot firmer with her)
we had a dog trainer come in last year and it brought the pack in line more and cemented our place as the alpha, but the dynamics have changed and the pup is challenging per position in the pack more frequently

ps I though she was bad until I got on a dog forum and saw what other staffys destroy, she's and angel compared to them, and she knows when she has done something wrong - I think dogs get ADD and Compulsive Disorders as well

All dogs look guilty (to some extent) when the owner gets angry. They also have the memory spans of gnats, which is why they should always be disciplined at the very moment they do something wrong.

At 2.5 years old, she's hardly a puppy. But sneaky? Could be. Our Ridgy was an angel in obedience class, because the instructor brooked no bull. Once he got home, it was another story. (For a Ridgeback, 'sneaky' means being so bold that you literally do another take before leaping up to rescue the latest victim of the dog's attention. It's a game to them.)

It's a matter of out-stubborning them. We succeeded in keeping them off the furniture, and bought dog-halters so we we could walk them.

Had a German Shepard cross Kelpie mutt who was smart enough that he learnt how to open the pantry (couldn't leave him outside or he'd bark himself stupid).

We would come home to find iced buns that no longer had their icing, walnuts that used to be part of mixed nuts (didn't like them, apparently) and the remains of boxes of cereal in the hallway.

Why the hallway? So he could us coming...

We ended up taking him to a 'boarding' school where they taught the police dogs. After three weeks, the trainer wanted to keep him - not because he suddenly became the perfect dog, but because he was smart enough to think for himself and had a massive protective streak.

Damn, I miss that dog.

A right pain in the butt, but he knew how and when to give hugs, he knew when the person at the door was there for good or for bad (my father was embroiled in a court case that got very nasty) and he knew just how to cheer up any day...

As for my parents' current dog, she's a beautiful lab. Sweetest thing ever and great with my niece, which the first dog would have never been...

She's chewed up razor blades, light globes, TWO hearing aids, a cordless phone, TV remote... And she's eight years old...

Not sure if we train them or they train us - nothing gets left down in my parents' house!

She get refered to as the "pup" cause she is the youngest off all the dogs we socialize her with.

Both her and my sherperd do the "tigr dance" when they hear our cars pull up to the drive way.

It is a wonderful way to be greeted at the front door especially after a hard day at work.

We try not to yell or raise our voices at them unless they are fighting each other (two staffys fighting they just lock their jaws and shake their heads), we have a firm command word (not "no" more a firm "ah" they hear no to often they may get de-sensitived to the word)

Green.. I understand about dogs chewing everything, she will put anything in her mouth, found my mobile in the back yard many times and she chewed a metal stainer once, she once ate 600grams of raw almond once, cleaned her right out (the vet just laughed, she seems use to the phone call from our house)

I watched my sherperd being born, and she has the most savage bark if she sences danger, even if she is doing it from behind me, If I am traveling on long distances visit to freinds in other states she comes with me in the car, people tend to leave you alone with a dog that big, and she is often over at my parents place if there is trouble in their area, nothing like a deep bark and growl to deter people
I fought tooth and nail with my ex to make sure she stayed with me and away from his "dogs need to be hit to toughen then up and discipline" attitude
I don't want to even image life without her,
(if Ihave to) even the staffy pup is now part of my pack, both dogs stayed by my side when I was sick and gave me comfort

I just have to remind myself when the pup does something wrong that I am the alpha in the pack and she is just doing what we let her get away with- in the long run the ownise is on me to remender her what is acceptable., I forget that sometimes pileobricks

Ohhh, you have Staffy's LW?

I have a very old one right now. She is 15, and unfortunately on her last legs. I suspect this will be her last summer - no I KNOW, this will be her last summer.

She has a cancerous growth on her foreleg, it has been removed twice and I do not want to put her through the procedure a third time. She is also partially blind and very deaf. I am just waiting for her to show me it is time to go, then we will trot off to the vet.

My dog was a chewer when we first got her but (she damaged a few things most memorable was my father's dentures), obviously, she does not do it now. She is the only dog in the family though so she is not having to pick her way through the pack. In fact sometimes I think she thinks she is the lowest on the totem pole, even after the cats. Other times I have really had to fight to reminder her I am the leader of the pack.
