I'll add my voice to Ame's and SJ's. They owe you big for jerking you around like this. Do you have any other options for an ISP? If you do, you could issue a well-place threat that if you don't have this problem resolved in a set time--time of your setting--you will switch providers and spread the word to eveyone you can that they offe lousy service and are not to be dealt with. Just a thought. That's kind of what I did a few years ago when the squirrel situation was going on.

The company is obviously big enough not to care in the slightest if you and your $59.95/mo disappear into the woodwork due to terrible service. they won't even care if you take your best friend with you, your mom and that guy at work that was going to switch anyways. they won't even notice you left until next year, when you get the spam mail asking if you're interested in switching from your current provider.

threating to "leave" is so incredibly ineffective at moving a company to action. unless "you" happen to be the voice for the company that sinks five figures a year into "them", all you're probably doing is getting the person on the other end of the phone and/or counter to roll their eyes and/or tell the other employees at break about how much of a hassle you were.

is it fair? no. is it decent? no. the best course is to simply remain reasonable and *immovable* until you get what you've paid for. then mail that letter of complaint to the head of the company and submit it to your newspaper.

if you're lucky, it'll be a slow day and it will make print. public embarrassment goes a helluva long way further than private hysterics at the some poor clerk who needs a paycheque too.

Oh, trust me, when I may my "threat" there was nothing hysterical about it. I made it clear that not only would I switch to another provider and take my computer, phone and cable with me. I also informed them that I would be reporting them to the regulatory authorities, the public media and any other agency I could think of. Whether it moved them or not, I can't say for sure. All I know is that immediately they got on the problem and got it fixed. And, no, this was not a small company in a small town either.

Just my two-cents worth.

Windstream isn't that small, but I get your point.

The prospect of bad publicity can be a great motivator. Especially a news article that could reach thousands of people, with many of them writing back and telling their stories about shitty service. Anecdotes are powerful things.

Thanks all for letting me rant here.

I have now officially been in tears at work.

The latest: the technician coming tomorrow cannot actually repair anything. I have to pay $230.00 for somebody to come and just check and say "yes, the problem is in the line in the building".

Then, when that is confirmed I have to arrange for an electrician/data cabler to fix the line.

At this point, I have officially gone ballistic.

SOme good news whilst I was on lunch. Benefits of working with IT guys. One of my guys here is a licensed cabler and can fix the problem once we know where and what it is. Will cost me the materials he needs.

Looks like I may get a fix this weekend after all!

Oh, Maddy, is this line problem in your house or apartment? If it is external, than the phone company should be responsible for everything, including the technician who diagnosis it and the one who fixes it, which really should be the same.

Oh this is just insane for you babe!!

I went through a similar problem when I changed ISP's just over a year ago -- but we were left for a month with no internet ... Ours wasn't a problem on our end, but a whole level of incompetance from Primus ... Didn't help us that the call centres are all in India and we couldn't understand, nor communicate, properly with them.

It was the first and only time I have ever heard/seen my baby boy lose his effing mind and get deliberately and rudely racist on someone....

Okay, it was amusing in the way he did it ... Flash has a dark sense of ... making things particularly clear ... that makes you laugh if you're not the one on the receving end...

It fell to him comparing the purchase of a cow to the purchase of internet connections ..

It finally took me stepping up and threatening a call to the competition bureau of Canada to discuss Primus and the unfair and misleading advertising act (am an expert on that considering my company got a 1.2Million fine for the same thing back in 2005 and I was then responsible for writing, researching and creating the policy and precedure manuals for the company to make sure it never happened again) for them to finally give us a number in Calgary to call to get it sorted....

...and we switched back to Bell ... who really were excited to have us back ... gee ... the deals we swung through them!! AWWESOMEEE

But off me .... oh so self absorbed aren't I?

I'm glad you've got friends to help you out, babe .... we can't wait until you're back with us again!!
