BOTP Viewing Order Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Report Post to a Moderator        IP Information Go to the top of this page

Here it is. The initial numbers are the proper viewing order (per Sandy Frank), followed by the BOTP title, then the corresponding Gatch title. The numbers in <> are the episode numbers on Veoh and on the DVD set.

I've been using that order from Jason Hofius' book for a fic I'm currently working on. That order leaves us with Cronus dead, Princess nearly killed and Space Center destroyed all within a short period of time. It makes it not look good for our heroes. More fodder for fanfics.

But Col. Cronus doesn't die in "Sky is Falling." He escapes at the last second.

In keeping with the general, 'He's not dead: he's pining for the fjords' focus of the series.

Given that characters do obviously die in a couple of episodes ('The Space Serpent' and 'The Perilous Pleasure Cruise'), I wonder at the Sandy Frank choices for episodes.

Some high-tech ejection technology on that show. Allows people to eject from crashing space capsules and exploding rockets and SURVIVE!

BOTP left us with no clues as to timing. You can make all this last as long as you want.

According to Jason's book (pg. 48 ):

Cronus was ultimately killed during a Spectran takeover of Riga. Worse, Mark was informed of Cronus' demise by Zoltar. Needless to say, the effect of his death was devastating to Mark.

I think it's Charioteers of Changu where we learn this information...

It's from "Attack of the Alien Wasp," and makes no sense if you view BotP in the Sandy Frank order. The "Cronus is definitely dead" bit comes only if you view the series in the original Gatchaman order and try to make sense of the series that way (And if you ignore "Awesome Ray Force"). Knowing some of the background on how personal elements completely unrelated to the show itself affected things like Jason saying that Cronus died came about, I suspect that he'd now admit that Cronus survived.

That's very interesting... I did not realize that. Thank you for enlightening us, James.

Okay, but you still have to admit the order of the episodes leave the team in a bad way at the end.

Yeah, but don't worry, Zark will have a new and improved Research Center designed and built by the next episode. Which, of course, was the first episode. Aaaiiieee!!! We're caught in a time loop!

But was the time loop caused by Zark's delusions of grandeur or Zoltar and his semi-competent scientists and goons?

Actually, this is brushed off in 23. Space Rocket Escort (The Mysterious Red Impulse) <11> by Anderson saying that Zoltar had fooled them before when he impersonated Cronus; the implication being that he might have been fooling them about the death as well, but that isn't explained at all.

I notice that the title of this thread is missing. Is it because it is NOT an 'episode of the week'?

Operationally, 'The Sky is Falling' should FOLLOW 'The Invasion of Space Center.' Take out the linchpin of Galaxy Security, then launch the X3. It could have worked in terms of plot. Edit out all shots of Crescent Coral Base and show Zark and the team somewhere else. Then, if the Sandy Frank folks really wanted to reassure the audience, they could follow up with an episode or two showing the team in action against Spectra. On Earth.
