Episode 28: "The Invisible Devil"

Gatchaman Episode 28: “The Invisible Devilâ€
BOTP Episode: N/A
The episode opens with kids playing a soccer match at a sports stadium.
Up in the stands, Joe and Ryu are watching. It certainly is rare to see these two hanging out together, with none of their teammates around. But then, the fact that Joe is standing, while everyone around him is sitting, suggests he might not be planning to stick around for long.
“Hey, they may only be youngsters, but they’re pretty good, huh Joe?†says Ryu.
If Joe does respond to him, we don’t get to hear it, as we cut back to the soccer-playing kids. They’re mostly clustered in front of the red team’s net, as the blue team is trying to make a goal. One of the blue kids kicks the ball towards the net, but the red goalie stops the ball –with his face.
This prompts Ryu to remark “Man, his nose is still there?†No comment from Joe.
The same blue kid kicks the ball at the net again, and this time the red goalie flips his legs straight up in the air behind him to catch the ball
This is sure a cool move, except that it seems the goalie might have had some ‘help’ with it –he keeps rising up into the air, flailing, even as one of his sneakers falls to the ground and the other kids look on, aghast.
There’s some odd pulsing, groaning noise, and then he fades from sight and vanishes completely.
This leaves nothing behind but the soccer ball, which falls to the ground and bounces into the net.
Hey, I guess that’s a point for the blue team after all, but the kids are far more interested in the fate of the levitating-and-disappearing goalie. As they all gasp in horror, strange undulating tire tracks suddenly begin appearing along the grass in front of the net, moving off the field.
Up in the stands, Ryu and Joe are viewing all this with consternation. “Hey Joe, did you see that?†asks Ryu. Finally, Ryu does get a response, and it’s “It’s invisible, you idiot!†Sheesh, Joe, no need to be mean. I guess we know why these two rarely hang out together.
So now we cut to an amusement park, where Ken is by himself, leaning against a tree and watching some kids riding flying horses on a merry-go-round.
One of the kids, a boy, calls out, “Hey, I’m the Science Ninja Team’s G-1, Gatchaman!â€
Ken smiles, but then immediately frowns –though it’s not clear if his thoughts have suddenly turned to the weighty responsibility of being a hero and role model for the world’s children, to regret for his own lost care-free childhood, or simply to deciding that the kid is annoying and possibly even mocking him.
Now the kid raises his arm in front of his face and calls out “Bird go!†Okay, Ken, shouldn’t you and your fellow Science Ninjas be a tad concerned that even some little kid knows about this? Stop transmuting in places where people can see you doing it!
At any rate, both the kid and Ken soon have other things to think about –with a wail of alarm, the kid suddenly begins rising up in the air, and then he fades and vanishes just like the soccer goalie did, and there’s the same pulsing, groaning noise.
As all the other kids on the merry-go-round look on, baffled, and Ken starts running, we get a sweeping view of the amusement park as the abducted boy is conveyed away invisibly, and all we hear is his voice, faintly calling for help…
Ken stops running, realizing he doesn’t know which way to go to find the boy.
But then he sees undulating tire tracks appear on the ground.
Ken immediately runs in the direction that the tire tracks are headed.
And he’s able to catch a faint glimpse of some kind of vehicle entering a building as a door in the building raises and then lowers.
“That’s the mirror dome,†says Ken, and he too runs inside it just before the door closes fully.
Inside the mirror dome, he gets another faint view of the vehicle (which rather resembles a giant snail on wheels) before it fades from sight.
As Ken looks for it, he runs smack into a mirror.
Then he realizes he’s completely surrounded by a multitude of reflections of himself, and is unable to tell where the vehicle has gone, or where he should go to find it.
Next, a crowd of people on a city street are watching a TV in a store window that’s showing a news broadcast. It’s announced that there are no leads on the “mysterious disappearances across the nation†and that officials aren’t even sure if they’re kidnappings or a “strange, scientific phenomenon.â€
As the newsman goes on that eight children have now disappeared, we see Berg Katse, who is also watching the same news broadcast at a Galactor base somewhere. He turns off the broadcast, laughs evilly, and gloats that “They don’t stand a chance against the brilliance of Lord Katse!†However, a goon who’s been standing patiently during all this wants to know what to do with the all children. “Hmm, we’ll use them as the eyes of Galactor,†replies Katse, stroking his chin.
He then stands, points dramatically, and tells the goon to “Release the children from the invisible tanks!â€
So now, in a large room that’s clearly part of that mirror dome at the amusement park, lights are turned on and directed at invisible tanks, making them become visible. Yup, they’re snails.
A compartment opens up in each of the snail tanks to reveal an unconscious child.
The snail tanks form a circle, and the soccer goalie, the kid from the merry-go-round, and six others are all lowered out of the snail tanks on little platforms that stick out in front of the tanks. It looks like all the children are boys.
The platforms holding the eight children all move towards the center, creating a smaller circle. Katse is watching, and at his word, a goon hits a switch and some kind of current begins flowing in a circle through all eight of the children’s heads. The children all flinch and gasp, but it doesn’t seem like they’re fully conscious.
“Watch as the children’s dream creatures become reality,†says Katse, and indeed, images of animals do appear in the now-shimmering air above the children’s heads.
“I will use these apparitions,†continues Katse, “to create a monster that can penetrate any security.†With an evil chuckle, he adds “I will call this monster Alphagila! Children have sharp memories; being a product of these children, Alphagila will be able to memorize the secret Mantle Project documents hidden in the ISO’s basement.â€

So now, we cut to the ISO headquarters.
But to its parking lot, not its basement. Inside one car, an ISO driver who currently doesn’t have anyone to convey anywhere is snoozing with a book over his face. (Ryu could relate to this guy!)
However, a strange throbbing noise makes him sit up quickly, and he sees a weird shimmering, translucent blob in the air above his car (it’s a convertible). But soon, he’s enveloped by it, and with a cry of anguish, he disappears.
The shimmering blob, that I assume is Alphagila, now enters the ISO headquarters, and anyone in its path is similarly enveloped and also disappears.
Back at Galactor’s mirror dome base, a goon at some monitoring equipment informs Katse that “It’s reached the file storage area in the basement.†Katse is pleased, and instructs the goon to “Run the memory unit at full capacity. Save the secret files in the computer as Alphagila reads them.â€
Alphagila enters a storage area by flowing through a keyhole in a lock.
“Alphagila’s started reading the secret files,†says the goon, studying a ticker tape printout coming from his monitoring equipment. “Finally we shall know the innermost secrets of the ISO!†gloats Katse.
Now we see the Crescent Base –the exterior shot that shows all the fish swimming past it. Inside, Ken, Jinpei, Jun and Ryu are all sitting on couches, in their civvies, but Joe has, once again, chosen to remain standing. Jinpei sighs and declares “I don’t get how they’re disappearing right in front of people!â€
Joe tells him that some things just can’t be explained. Ryu adds that he doesn’t believe in “all that paranormal nonsense,†as Jinpei then speculates that maybe the kid Joe and Ryu saw disappearing was merely hiding. Ken then insists that that kid, and the one he saw himself, really disappeared, and that he also saw “A hazy looking blue snail thing in the mirror dome.â€
“We searched all through the mirror dome,†says Joe, “And we didn’t find anything at all.â€
“How are we supposed to be able to stop this thing if we can’t even see it?†asks Jun.
So, they are at an impasse, but fortunately Dr. Nambu comes walking in now and announces “Well, there’s been another bizarre incident.†As the others gather around, he explains that a “mysterious creature†appeared at the ISO. Jinpei wants to know if he could actually see it.
But Dr. Nambu explains that he was told that it disappeared once it reached the secret file rooms in the basement. Ryu wants to know if any files are missing, but Dr. Nambu says that everything seems to still be there.
Ryu wonders if there really was a creature at all, but Dr. Nambu is certain there was, as it killed two men when they came into contact with it. Dr. Nambu is also concerned because Mantle Project files are kept in the secret file rooms. Everyone is convinced that Galactor must be behind this. A scowling Joe says “It keeps getting worse and worse. First the disappearing children, and now Galactor is acting up.†This gets Ken thinking, and he asks Joe and Ryu if they heard anything strange when they saw a kid disappear.
Well Ken did, and so did Joe and Ryu. This really gets Dr. Nambu thinking.
But we now cut to scenes of Mantle Project installations all around the world being destroyed. A large dam bursts and floods a power-generating station, the cooling stack at a nuclear power plant explodes, and large, circular fuel tanks explode at some other location.
Explosions destroy a geothermal power plant, and a ruptured hose at a petrochemical plant unleashes massive explosions there, as a worker cries “We’re being attacked by an invisible enemy!â€
Now we see Joe punching a wall, repeatedly. “The dam (punch), the geothermal center (punch), the petrochemical plant (punch)…†He shakes with rage for a moment, before turning to the others with an angry fist in the air. “All part of the Mantle Project! They must have stolen secret documents!â€
Jinpei points out that no documents are missing. “Do you think they stole them, read them and returned them?†he asks, sarcastically.
“Maybe they’re psychic,†is Jun’s suggestion. “ESP?†replies Ryu, “You mean like when you close your eyes and see things that are supposed to happen? What a load of crap!†He wants Ken (who’s busy looking out a window at the fish swimming by) to tell the others to get serious.
But Ken only demands “What are we supposed to do? We can’t see the enemy! We’ll have to wait for Dr. Nambu to return from the ISO.â€
Meanwhile, at the ISO, Alphagila is at it again. It envelops and “kills†another person, causing him to disappear, and other people all flee in panic. Someone runs to Dr. Nambu’s office to tell him that “the monster†is once again in the file storage area.
Two security guards in the storage area try shooting Alphagila, but it doesn’t do any good and they too get enveloped by Alphagila, and disappear as they cry out in horror. More security guards rush into the file storage area, guns waving, but then Dr. Nambu’s voice comes over a speaker system and orders them not to go near the monster. Dr. Nambu then instructs someone to turn on the cameras inside the file storage facility. “What is that?†he gasps, watching camera footage on a screen. “That†is Alphagila, the translucent, shimmering blob, and it’s somehow turning the pages of books.
“Look!†says Dr. Nambu, “The monster is flipping through our files! It’s reading the documents!â€
Meanwhile, at Galactor’s mirror dome base, Katse is happily reading more Alphagila-generated ticker tape reports of secret Mantle Project data. Dr. Nambu continues to just sit and watch the camera footage of Alphagila riffling through documents, and Katse continues to gloat and read.
But suddenly Dr. Nambu stands up and cries “That’s it!†He quickly contacts Ken, who’s still standing at the Crescent Base window, watching the fish. Dr. Nambu tells him to “Rendezvous at the ISO immediately! Gather the Team and launch the God Phoenix!†Well, the Team’s all standing right beside Ken, so the “gathering†part will be easy.
Now we get some stock footage of the God Phoenix exiting its docking bay at the Crescent Base and heading up to break the sea’s surface and continue on into sky. However, we’re also shown yet more energy facilities that are part of the Mantle Project being attacked and destroyed, and this time we can see the undulating tire tracks of the snail tanks appearing on the ground as the attacks occur.
“Crush them! Destroy every part of the Mantle Project with the hand of Galactor!†cries Katse, laughing, as pleas for help are heard from a Desert Research Center that’s going up in massive flames. “SOS! We’re being annihilated by an invisible enemy!â€
Commercial Break!

[Thank you, Saturn, for the screencaps!]
Dr. Nambu is studying images of the snail tanks’ tire marks on a screen, as the Team looks on. From their size and depth, he’s concluded they are tank tracks.
“Invisible tanks, huh? Galactor sure spent time on this one,†says Joe.
Next, Dr. Nambu shows them images of the shimmering, translucent blob that is Alphagila, reading documents in the ISO’s file storage facility. As Ken asks “What’s that?†he explains that it’s the monster that’s been reading the Mantle Project documents. Ryu wants to know what kind of monster it is, but Dr. Nambu doesn’t know.
But, the Team all realize that Alphagila is somehow transmitting the documents’ contents to Galactor, who then send out the invisible tanks to attack. “Then the entire Mantle Project will be destroyed!†gasps Jinpei, “We have to do something quickly!†So, Ryu shakes Jinpei’s head with his hand, and says “What are we going to do, runt? The enemy is invisible, remember?â€
But, Dr. Nambu has a plan. Using a glass ashtray to demonstrate, he notes that Galactor has somehow been able to create tanks that refract light the same way that air does, so they seem invisible, but that it is imperfect –that’s why Ken was able to see a tank briefly inside the mirror dome.
Ken understands, and Jinpei nods and claims that he too grasps the Doctor’s little science lesson. Ryu is skeptical of this.
But an indignant and flustered Jinpei can only retort “You’re dense, dude!†to Ryu
“I’m assuming that the tank is able to disappear,†continues Dr. Nambu, “if light is hitting it from one direction, but if it’s hit with light from all directions, like in the mirror pavilion, it’s visible.â€
“Yeah, what he said. Get it now?†says Jinpei, elbowing Ryu.
Ken wants to know if the Doctor has a plan. He does, but he says that one of them will have to become a decoy. He’s been studying the data on the missing children, and he noticed that Galactor only abducted children with relatively high brain waves. He doesn’t know why, but he’s certain it must be somehow connected to the monster in the file storage facility. Hey, wait a minute! All the children that were abducted were boys! Who says they have higher brain waves?
Ken realizes that the plan is that the decoy will get kidnapped on purpose, so they’ll be able to search Galactor’s base. Dr. Nambu says the decoy’s brain waves will be raised to three times their normal level, to lure Galactor.
“In the end, Jun was chosen to be the decoy,†says the narrator, as we see Jun lying on a table in a lab, with a special helmet with several antennae attached to it.
We aren’t told if she was selected because she has the highest brain waves on the Team, or in order to send a message to Galactor about gender equality (I mean, really, eight boys and not a single girl?), or because the writers suddenly realized that she’d had virtually no lines or anything interesting to do yet in the entire episode. It turns out, though, that getting your brain waves artificially boosted to abnormally high levels is a damned unpleasant process. “Strong electromagnetic waves were pulsated through Jun,†the narrator tells us, as she thrashes on the table and cries out in pain.
Ken and the others are outside the room, with Dr. Nambu, watching on a screen, and it’s safe to assume, from their shocked reactions, that they didn’t know what the brain wave-boosting process would entail when she was chosen as the decoy.
At any rate, next we see Jun, she’s walking through the amusement park where the mirror dome is, and she seems to be okay. The others are watching her discreetly from a distance. Now we see that Galactor is watching her too, on a screen.
One goon notes that her brain waves levels are “way above the required level,†and another goon agrees, “Yes, bring her in.â€
Ken and Joe are still watching Jun from a distance, and they see the undulating tire tracks appear on the ground, coming up behind her.
Sure enough, as she turns she gets elevated into the air and then disappears, accompanied by the pulsing and groaning noises.
Ken and Joe look worried, but hey, everything’s going according to plan. Ken pulls a device from his pocket –a radar detector- and using it, he can tell that the invisible tank is heading for the mirror dome.
Ken, Joe, Ryu and Jinpei are all running into the mirror dome, behind the invisible tank. Suddenly, a trap door opens beneath their feet and they all fall down.
Ken yells “Bird Cross!†and, while falling, they all interlock their left hands in such a way that each one is grasping another’s wrist while their own wrist is also grasped.
Other than making sure they don’t get separated, I’m not sure what this is supposed to accomplish, but they all then yell “Bird Go!†and transmute to birdstyle, still in their “bird cross†formation.
Meanwhile, one of the boys has been removed from the circle that generates Alphagila, and replaced with an unconscious Jun.
Looking on, Katse is informed by a goon that “four males†followed her into the mirror dome, but that they all fell in when the trap door in the floor was opened. Katse’s not that interested, but tells the goon to make sure their dead bodies are removed, as “They mustn’t be discovered.†Now, the current is circling through Jun and the other boys’ heads, and Jun is flinching and gasping as Alphagila is generated in the air above them.
Katse remarks that it’s a pity that Alphagila can’t be sustained for very long, but says he’ll keeping regenerating it, over and over, until the entire Mantle Project is destroyed.
At the bottom of the trap, Ken and the others aren’t dead but they are trapped, much to their annoyance, as they can’t find a way out.
However, at that moment, a secret door in one of the “eye balls†opens, some distance above the floor and the two goons stuck with dead-body-clean-up duty appear. They’re puzzled to see no broken corpses on the floor, but they quickly get surprised by four Science Ninjas who were hiding from view below them. Ken punches out both goons, and then they all run down the corridor that leads away from the door, and leap at a bunch of other goons who are standing there.
Cue the big fight scene! This time it’s the unusual combination of all four guys but no Jun. Ken takes out three goons with a kick to the leg, a hand to the back of the neck, and a kick to the face, respectively and then flips through the air as Joe passes him, flipping in the other direction to take out two goons, by hitting one hard on the back of the neck, and then leaping up in the air to kick the other one in the side of the head.
Meanwhile, Jinpei has grabbed another goon by one leg and sends him careening into a wall, as Ryu pins a goon’s head under his arm and then punches him repeatedly in the head. Then, all four Science Ninjas leap into the air together and join hands to form “Science Ninja Technique: Cross Fighter!†–something we’ve never seen before.
They spin rapidly in the air, and create a wind effect similar to the Tornado Fighter, which sends goons flying. Then, they end the formation and continue down the corridor, though Ken takes the time to demonstrate another new maneuver that involves him leaping in the air to come down atop the shoulders of a goon who is facing him and then squeeze the goon’s head between his thighs before leaping past him –the goon sure doesn’t enjoy it!

At the ISO headquarters, Alphagila has appeared and is entering one of the file storage areas through a keyhole, but suddenly it leaves the same way it came –that part of the file storage area is empty.
Back at the mirror dome base, a goon notes that something’s wrong and that Alphagila isn’t transmitting anything. “What?†says Katse, and then we see Alphagila moving into a different part of the file storage area.
Back in the base’s corridor, a blow from Ken’s hand strikes a goon’s face, snapping off one his mask’s yellow fangs. Turning, Ken kicks another goon in the head and punches out a third one.
Dr. Nambu and two other men are watching camera footage of Alphagila in the file storage area, as one man notes that it appeared, “Just as you suspected.â€
As Dr. Nambu stares intently, holding his chin, we see that Alphagila has finally located some documents to read, and begins transmitting data to Galactor.
Out in the corridor, Ken leaps at two goons and kicks them both before landing and turning to kick another one. Then he punches a goon in the face, so hard that his mask cracks apart. Another goon runs at him, but Ken dodges him agilely and then Ryu (who’s following behind Ken) clobbers him. This is clearly the episode for new fighting tactics. Now Ken leaps over a stooping goon but pauses in the air long enough to paddle the goon’s butt with his feet before moving on.
The goon is so stunned by this bizarre action that he is unable to react in time to avoid Ryu, who now leaps into the air, legs raised, and comes crashing down on the poor goon, who seems to make a very bouncy cushion for Ryu.
In the control room, Katse is reading more of Alphagila’s transmissions and cackling “Now I know everything!†as, back in the corridor, a bunch of goons firing machine guns rush at Joe. Joe is turning sideways handsprings to avoid the bullets, but then lands in a crouch and fires his gun at the goons such that a cable flies out from it and strikes all of them.
“The ISO has built a giant uranium storage facility in the desert,†reads Katse from some ticker tape, “Send the invisible tanks out immediately to retrieve the uranium!â€
“Not so fast, Berg Katse!†yells Ken’s voice, as his birdrang tears the ticker tape from Katse’s hand. Ken catches it again, and then spins it around with somewhat unnecessary flourish before putting back on his belt. He’s looking down on the control room from a higher level, flanked by Ryu, Joe and Jinpei.
“Gatchaman! How did you get in here?†demands Katse.
“This is the end,†declares Ken, “Of all your wicked plans, you monster!â€
But now Katse only laughs, and says he has no further use for the base or the abducted children (and the goons standing beside him now all run away) as he’s just discovered the “location of your precious Mantle Project!†He then turns and leaps through a glass window, escaping, just as Ken and Joe jump down to try to grab him.
They look through the shattered window and see, far below, the circle of unconscious children plus Jun, and all the snail tanks leaving the mirror dome and becoming invisible as they drive away
Ken concludes they can, at least, still rescue the abducted children and Jun. As Joe, Ryu and Jinpei soar down to do just that, Ken contacts Dr. Nambu.
[Oh, I see there is at least one little girl here now. I guess Jun isn't the first girl upgrade they've abducted for Alphagila.]
He reports their success at locating the base and rescuing the children and Jun, but regrets that they weren’t able to stop the invisible tanks. Dr. Nambu, however, tells him not to give up hope. “Hurry and come back,†he adds, “We still have one card that we can play.â€
Now, we see a desert, and the undulating tracks of all the invisible snail tanks are appearing in the sand as they approach the dome-shaped uranium storage facility.
“Lord Katse, there it is!†says a goon’s voice, and Katse’s voice replies “Very well, all troops attack at once!†So, the invisible tanks all approach the facility’s main door, blow it open, and then all proceed inside. Once inside, though, lights all over the room turn on, and all the tanks become visible.
The side of one snail tank opens and Katse looks out from inside it, aghast to see that they’re all inside a dome-shaped, glass room and that light is shining on the tanks from many different directions.
Over a speaker, we can hear Dr. Nambu laughing, and saying “Welcome, distinguished members of Galactor!†as Katse, and now a bunch of tank-driving goons too, all peer out of their tanks and look around in alarm. Katse now realizes that the last data that Alphagila read and transmitted was fake. A panel high up in the room dome-shaped room now opens and Dr. Nambu is standing there surveying the tanks below. He confirms that Katse and the invisible tanks have indeed been lured into a trap.
“I won’t let you forget this!†snarls an angry Katse as he gets back inside his snail tank, and all the tanks drive towards the door to get out of the dome. But, then the God Phoenix swoops down and its nose goes right inside the dome’s door, knocking all the nearest tanks back and making them crash into the tanks behind them.
As the tanks crash into each other, they all explode and their goon drivers go flying and cry “Aughhh!†Katse is also sent flying out of his snail tank as it explodes, and then one of its tires comes flying at him and hits him right in his midsection.
Now, all five Science Ninjas are standing on top of the God Phoenix’s nose, looking down at Katse.
“Your tanks aren’t so special once they’re detectable, huh?†demands Ken. Katse is still sort of huddled on the ground, and he doesn’t answer but it does sound like he’s starting to laugh to himself. Soon, Katse bursts into full, evil laughter as Ken and Dr. Nambu both stare, puzzled by this. As Nambu says “No!†to himself, Katse stands up dramatically and calls out “So you think you’ve won, Gatchaman? Mighty Galactor will never fall!†Now, Katse sweeps his arm and what looks like blue fire shimmers in the air all around him.
While Ken stares in alarm, in the midst of the blue flames, Katse laughs “Till we meet again, Gatchaman!â€
Then both he and the flames disappear, to reveal a hole in the ground where Katse had been standing (and through which he has, somehow, just escaped now). Okay, I understand that Katse has to escape at the end, but this has to be one of his least plausible escape methods. (How the heck did he tunnel that hole so fast?)
Ken continues to stare down in disbelief at the place where Katse had just been standing but doesn’t bother to investigate to see if Katse has, by chance, not gotten very far yet –they are in the middle of a barren desert after all! I guess Ken is somehow becoming aware of the “Katse must always escape†rule too! However, Ken soon turns to look up instead, perhaps taking heart at the fact that they did, after all, defeat Galactor’s invisible tanks and Alphagila. The final shot is of the Team in the desert, watching the sunset.
The End.

I thought a mini-mech had tunneled in from below, and Katze/Galactor ducked into it while hidden by the flame. Which means the PDOS had his escape planned out well in advance. As usual.

I figured it might have to do with the aerodynamics involved once they transformed. And that must have been quite a drop. The green goon duo certainly weren't expecting to find anyone alive!

One thing that bugs me about this -if they wanted to change the Tornado Fighter for Gatch II so much, why couldn't they have used some variation of this instead of that sill Care Bear Stare business?
