Dear all,
Unlike the culture in the western, we do not really have a prom night event here at the end of academic year. We do have something like a simple farewell party after the graduation day, but this was usually organised by individual classes and will be held at external venues rather than in the school auditorium. The party is also optional, and some classes may decide not to held any parties at all.
However, high-school reunion is indeed very popular at my place, and is usually held every 5 years, so we will have a 5-year reunion party, 10-year reunion party, and so on.
To tell you the truth, the reason why high-school reunion is very popular event here is because of one main reason,MONEY. The successful people will love to show off his/her successful careers, businesses, etc, and the less-successful people will actually come to the reunion to share their "oh pity me" stories, and then, get this, will actually ask for money from the more successful ones. This also applies to teachers, who will also actually try to sponge off of their ex-students, how classy, , and that is the main reason why I have always tried my best to avoid from attending any reunions.
I did however attend the 10-year reunion party after much persuasions from my friends, and other than the above problem, I actually found myself enjoying the party. Many funny and amusing stories were shared, and it was kinda cute to see the many changes that people have undergone in 10 years.
Many of my old friends were shocked to see that I still looked the same like I did 10 years ago (I am not sure whether to take it as a compliment or not, I mean, some of my plain-looking friends in high school had by then transformed into extremely gorgeous people, so to look the same like you did 10 years ago could not actually be considered as an accomplishment, )
They were even more shocked to know that me, a former troublemaker in my class, would turn out to be a college lecturer, but hey, despite my troublemaker nature, I am always a nerd at heart, and I could not be happier with my choice of career now, !
