Not frequently, but constantly and consistently. If you look at it, her hair is always green, except when viewed through the visor of her helmet. This was obviously a conscious decision on the part of the staff at Tatsunoko, but no explanation was given. Perhaps they felt that black was too visually boring and having a 5th Ninja Team member with brown hair was a bit too much.

I was told it was a cost thing -- Early on her hair was black.

My understanding was that the black paint was too expensive so they opted to go green -- or something like that.

I'm not making any sense ... It's 4am, so my brain isn't functioning right now.

To me, it seems to vary in colour (unless it's just the way my computer moniter is set or that some images have faded over time). I'd definitely say her hair is green in the first pic, but not the second.

ITA it varies. Her eyes do too. Sometimes they are blue. (the scene in Jigokillers where she is talking to Jinpei before going off on her own on the bike comes to mind)

I think they also try and take on the lighting they want the scene to appear so they vary the colours of hair and eyes to create it.

Well, green is a common base colour in black paint, and after time the green becomes stronger.

but what James said has me intrigued. So the original plan of Gatchaman II was to have Joe's long lost brother, Jack, join the team while Joe lost his memories and worked for Galactor? So Galactor had saved Joe and turned him into a cyborg?

Which is what causes most of the variations that people have noticed, along with variations dependant on the quality of the original source material and the transfers made from them.

Going to the most primary of source materials, I've checked the animation cels I have from Gatchaman, Gatchaman II, and Gatchaman Fighter. I don't have a ton of cels of Jun in her civilian clothing, but in those that I do have, her hair is painted in some shade of green.

Yes and no. This material does come from a series with the proposed title of "Gatchaman 2," but it is not the same Planning that was eventually used to create "Gatchaman II." The series we know as "Gatchaman II" came from Planning for a series that was tentatively titled "New Science Ninja Team Gatchaman."

By a comment in the "Gatchaman 2" Planning that it had been two years since the original "Gatchaman" ended, it is likely that this Planning was created in 1976, two years before "Gatchaman II" was finally produced. Joe would have spent his time combatting the Science Ninja Team under the guise of the Space Joker (With the "Jo" part of "Joker" being spelled using the same katakana as the name "Joe" was). One of his main weapons was to be black-colored Feather Shuriken, and his main ship was a flying mecha named the "Condora." While I'm sure that they weren't going to tell people right away that the Space Joker was actually Joe, these things (Along with a recognizable, if disguised, face)would have made it hard for most viewers not to have figured out who he was.

Thank you James for letting me know about the plans for Gatchaman 2. It seemed an interesting idea of having Joe working for Galactor again but then it would have been obvious that the Space Joeker character was Joe.

Hurray for shameless self promotion! I really enjoyed that story and I liked the suave evilness of Ego. I am starting to understand him more as a villain now - thank you for sharing that. (also thank you for thinking up a romatically steamy Condor shower scene!).

'Secret Lives' was my second story. I did it because TJ wanted to know what happened with Joe and his new Girl friend from the previous story.
