Ego was born with the name of Erun. His father was the old Count Egobossler, and his mother was a castle maid. He was illegitimate. His father had a legitimate son named Kaseru, who was next in line to be the Count.

One night, Ego's father (who was given to fits of violence) killed the maid (Ego's mother). As she died, she revealed to Ego the truth of his parentage. Ego ran away. When he returned, he had had surgery to change his appearance to look exactly like that of his legitimate half-brother Kaseru. The process had somehow made his skin blue and his hair white. He challenged his father, and Kaseru took out his sword, slicing the bandages off of Ego's face (which is how he got his cheek scar). Ego kileld his father and imprisoned his brother, usurping his place and telling everyone that HE was Kaseru.

I'm a little fuzzier on the next bit, but later on in the series, the real Kaseru is released and he stages a rebellion to take back the title from Erun/Ego. One of Ego's generals (name escapes me at the moment,but the one with the headphones) deserts him, calling him a traitor, but Mekandor remains at his side (the one who looks like Gimli). Eventually Erun kills his brother and quashes the rebellion, solidifying his hold on the title of Count Egobosler.

I see that the creators didn't throw away the idea of a long lost brother. At one time, they were going to use a long lost brother of Joe's to come back to the team instead of Joe returning himself. Is that right, James?
