NEW YORK - The U.S. Army has long lured recruits with the slogan “Be All You Can Be,” but now soldiers and their families can receive plastic surgery, including breast enlargements, on the taxpayers’ dime.

The New Yorker magazine reports in its July 26th edition that members of all four branches of the U.S. military can get face-lifts, breast enlargements, liposuction and nose jobs for free -- something the military says helps surgeons practice their skills.

“Anyone wearing a uniform is eligible,” Dr. Bob Lyons, chief of plastic surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio told the magazine, which said soldiers needed the approval of their commanding officers to get the time off.

Between 2000 and 2003, military doctors performed 496 breast enlargements and 1,361 liposuction surgeries on soldiers and their dependents, the magazine said.

The magazine quoted an Army spokeswoman as saying, “the surgeons have to have someone to practice on.”

You mean, there aren't enough people who pay out of their own pocket to be practiced on? Discount for trainee-doc?

Yes, they do need practice, esp the docs who do reconstructive or corrective, and I can almost make a case for liposuction in some cases [1], but breast implants? And a bit off the hips?

Not in my books.

[1] when there's a real weight problem, and other things have been tried, and it's accompanied by serious therapy and monitoring. And implants after removal -- maybe, but I've heard enough horror stories where they used a legit service, I'd rather the patient wait a year and see if she can get used to the alternatives.

As a slogan, it makes perfect sense. Isn't there some problem with really big silicone ones on planes, or is that an urban myth? If it's true, I assume they'd set limits on the size of implants for air crew?

Maybe part of the liposuction thing is to make sure people fit into standard size uniforms after all those McDonalds lunches?
