It looks quite real to me, I don't know how they could fake it. Elephants are very intelligent animals and the artist would know the subject of the painting quite well. LOL!

If you read further down the article someone says that the elepant has been trained to paint that design, and there is another link to a youtube movie of the same elephant doing a very similar picture but on orange canvas, and filmed from further away so you can see that it really is the elephant, and not someone wearing a rubber trunk puppet on their arm.
