I tried myspace for a while and wasn't too impressed. Do you like facebook?

I teach, and there's this nice big announcement on our community bulletin board telling us not to use Facebook or myspace.
The Ohio Education Association made a formal announcement against Facebook and myspace...some media sources have gone so far as to say they've "banned" the two sites' use for teachers.
I guess it validates the reason I try to keep myself nice and safe behind my usernames and/or behave myself when I could be connected to my username (the way I can with this one). My students have certainly had no trouble finding my Gatch page...or my writing page. *sigh*
Hope you're able to find some folks who aren't being told their jobs may depend on staying away from those sites... I resent having to "behave" in my personal life because someone might be watching. It sure doesn't stop celebrities!

I use facebook. Sometimes I'm too tired or lazy to compose an email or make a phone call (especially when my cellphone's free long distance doesn't include Canada) but I've found that facebook gives me at least of facade of contact with friends and relatives. How else would I read or comment on poems composed by my 17 year old step-nephew in Ottawa, or know that an ex-boyfriend in Nova Scotia is training to be a sea-kayaking instructor and guide, or that, God help me, I have a 20 year high school reunion coming up in July? Plus, I find it easier to just post my photos in one place and let people look at them or not look at them, rather than try to email them all to different people.
I have a Myspace site for my students, but my real name and iedntity is not attached to it. It's basically a replacement for a course website in a place my students go to anyhow. I chose Myspace as opposed to Facebook because you don't need to be a member on Myspace to see the page. i post the homework in the blog and the students are my 'friends... that way they can subscribe to the homework blog.
Does your school not give you space for a course website? Both the schools I work for use Blackboard (groan) and TurnItIn (a plagiarism detection site). I'd really like it if we all got web space, but noooo, they prefer to give us technology that still uses HTML coding from 1995...
I know one of the other profs uses facebook because she teaches about it as a social phenom, and after she uses it, students often "friend" her. She hasn't, to my knowledge, had problems.

I'd hate to be controlled to that degree by my profession. I can understand some areas but those apply to everyone...
But then some people tell me because of my beliefs that I should stay away from fantasy books... not go near D&D etc...I roll my eyes... Some friends would be shocked if they knew I did fanfic, and some of my pics. I still read my books and write my stories, judge me if they want to...I don't answer to them if I got all wrong...
Seriously I feel some people just lack imagination and if they don't understand it at all, then they put a label on it...

I honestly think that the anti-facebook movement is just stupid.
Your personal life is your personal life - your work life is your work life - let's keep the two separate.
to some degree, I suppose, I might understand the teaching profession cracking down on it, but fuck, these people have lives and a right to enjoy the same shit the rest of us do.
How is having a facebook site any worse than going to a pub and enjoying a few long ones? You aren't banned from getting trashed at the local bar, why is facebook so much more ....
I'm not making any sense am I?
I just am getting sick and fucking tired of our lives becoming so controlled these days.
I personally think Facebook is the shit. I have found and reconnected with friends I went to school with. I can share photos and giggles with family and friends without it costing me a fortune ... When you're as far away from home as I am, something like this is an absolute Godsend!
And ya know .... When I look outside at the mountains of snow this poor city has been pelted with over the past month or so, chatting with one of my friends back home really warms me up - for a damn sight less than 10 cents a minute...

Oh, they do, but the students never go there. They're ON Myspace, and find it more interesting to visit that site, plus they have the ability to subscribe to the 'homework blog' which they dont' have on the regular course website.
I was bitching about that with Flash this morning.
Ryerson should be absolutely red-faced and embarrassed by this!
But what I don't get is why only this guy is being penalized - sure he is administrator, but what about the 140 other students on the group? Aren't they "cheating" as well?!
This anti-facebook thing is getting out of hand, really. The only reason they're doing it is because it is facebook ...
I feel sorry for this poor lad, though...
