It really makes me feel better to know I wasn't the only one that thought that particular person was going overboard with his criticisms. I guess he's just trying to be constructive, but it's like he wants Springie to draw everything EXACTLY as he would draw it. It's like, HELLOOOOO!! It's called personal style and artistic license! *rolls eyes*
And your art is fantastic, Melissa!! It gets better all the time, and now that you have Photoshop, I think your stuff will be up there in the vanguard! =) Anyone that gave your art such a low score either needs their eyes checked, or is just a trolling loser. The latter being the more likely. >;P
So keep a stiff upper lip and don't give up!! As you know, I had some issues with deviantART myself lately, but I've finally cooled off and plan to continue on with my various art projects too. *hugs*

Where someone is marking things with zeroes and not leaving comments so they look completely anonymous, and might not even need to be registered to do it in the first place, try thinking of them as a troll rather than as a critic. Someone who's out to cause upset for the "fun" of it.
I think the worst feedback I've ever seen, where I never did work out whether it was trolling or not, was back in the days of the GML in, uh, 1998 maybe. The GML was completely unmoderated and uncontrolled and all kinds of trolling and flame wars used to go on. Anyway, someone posted a fic there that was perfectly competent and well written, and fortunately not her first otherwise I think it might have put her off completely. Someone replied, quoting the entire fic, and right at the end put "This is shit, don't post it again" or something very much like that. I don't know whether maybe it was something the guy wrote and never meant to post, or whether it was a purposeful act. I've never seen anyone do anything quite that bad before or since. I'm still surprised that it's been about 10 years and I can still remember it so clearly - me and my memory are not the best of friends. But you can imagine the sort of upset that caused. I'm sure the reason I can still remember it is because I felt so upset for the girl whose fic it was.

Oh, that is just awful Meridian, is the person still writing in spite of that terrible troll? I hope they didn't give up...sounds like there were plenty of people to rally around her...

Here's my story of my run in with an internet asshat. Back in mid 90s to late 90s, I was writing some comic fanfic stories for a writing group dedicated to the Marvel Universe. These were my first attempts at writing and they weren't that technically strong (awkward sentences, tense shifts, stiff dialogue, that sort of thing).
Anyway, I wrote the first chapter of a series that had street level heroes (Spider-Man, Daredevil, Power Man and Iron Fist, and a few others) fighting a brutal crime wave with the Kingpin and a few other characters. The idea was I write the first issue and the other writers would finish the series doing an issue each. Course that never did happen but that's another story. 
So I get an anonymous letter that "critique" my story. The guy tore it into shreds. He didn't leave anything standing. He attacked my story on the technical writing side of things, the story itself and related characterization and everything in between. When I read that hate filled letter I was flabbergasted. I never expected to receive anything that nasty from a story. Once I calmed down, I wrote a detailed reply to the letter and where the writer had legitimate complaints, I thanked him for the help. Course in the sections where he didn't have a clue what he was talking about - I called him on it and gave as good as I got.  I realized I learnt a lot from that email and it helped improve my writing.
That should be the end of the story but as it turned out, the mailing list dedicated to the Marvel Universe group was getting some nasty email as well. As it turns out this guy was angry for being turned away from the writing group. He took his jealousy out on a few writers, myself included. The thing I learnt was not to listen to the rantings of an idiot. I decided that I would learn as much as I could about my craft but anything else said isn't important. I learnt to grow a thicker skin.
It's a skill all creative people have to learn when displaying their work to the public.

It is for this reason that I refuse to go anywhere near the the BotP ML or anything affiliated with them. I received horrific reviews from the group I call "the Coven" both on list and off-list that was not constructive nor encouraging ... The only reason I continued to write was because of Yuki and Buffy, who pulled me off somewhere else to share and grow with them.
They told me where I got it wring, where I got it right, and encouraged me rather than put me down because my stuff was not to the "standard" of the BotP ML crew.
Sure it aint great, but I'm not that bad, either.
Tho it still fucking blows my mind that the worst piece of junk I ever wrote was actually fairly well received. If Rebellion was okay, then my other stuff must have been stellar!
OF course it wasn't ....
But, babe .... Springie ... As I have repeatedly told you. There are quite a few artists out there, one in particular who shall remain nameless, who is incredible at perfectly mimicing the characters EXACTLY as on screen - in fact even more perfect than even the original artists on the series. But these images are so bland, so unfeeling, and so unnatural and forced (IMHO - of course) that I can merely snort, shrug and skip to the next one.
It is imperfections that make work so sublime and honest, which is what you do. The little flaws and attributes that are ALL YOU are what make your work so blessedly yummy and incredible.
I'd take your birds over the originals any day!
Please don't take offence in that - you know, that they aren't technically perfect - because there is none intended, and I am really complimenting you. The way you render them leaves no doubt who they are, and where they're from, but the little differences makes them yours and mine and everyone else like me who loves them.
Tortosa couldn't breathe life into them like you do.
Neither, for the most part, could Ross - who is arguable one of the best birdie artists out there...
But you can, kiddo.
You most certainly can...

You know, Tim...it's a challenge...but I do think i am getting a thicker skin through all of this, too. I am so glad you didn't let that jerk stop you...you have accomplished some great things!!
And I think it is a creative person's nature to be sensitive, don't you? I mean, all of us here are creative in some way, and we have to be sensitive (and perceptive) to be able to do what we do...what do you think?

LOL. I hate what Ross did to the Gatch characters. (Though I actually really like the image SJ has in her sig...dammit, I need to either find a bigger scan of that or buy the stupid box...) The ONLY picture I can genuinely say I really like of his is the one on the front of the Joe one-shot. He does an okay job with Jun, but definitely not great, and I hate the way he makes Ken look.
Everyone gasps when I say I don't like Ross' art, because that's blasphemy in the comic book world, but darnit, I don't like it. The point is, everybody has people who think they're no good, even the Greatest of Greats. I'll take your stuff over Alex Ross' any day of the week, because in your work the characters LOOK like themselves.

Lord, I just hope it's not me.  I don't think I'm that good technically, though, as to make them look exactly the same, I think mine are affected by my style. So I'm going to think positive.  Plus, the way you can tell if I'm ever abducted by aliens is if there's no passion. I'm the passionate sort, they tell me.
