A New Article On the CG Gatchaman Movie

Hi all!

IESB.net has posted a new article on the CG Gatchaman movie, with an interview with Kevin Munroe and Tom Tanaka, where they talk a little more about the story for the film, the characters, and their hopes to preview the film at the San Diego Comic Con next summer.

Hmmm... Prequel... Who would die? It could be RI, since they say "dies at one point", which could leave it open for a faked death. But they also said it was a key moment and that all the characters grow from it... Supposedly Ken isn't left in Nambu's care until after RI fakes his death.... Ooh! The speculation!!!

It also looks like the Gatchaman film will be a turning point for animation, much like the original series was for anime. Cool! Cool!! Cool!!! Animeclap

I notice the "dies at one point" phrasing too, and wondered if that was a mistake in language.

So someone is going to die and come back from the dead?

Or, because this is a prequel will it be another member of the team, a 6th member, a Donald Wade (can't remember his name in Gatch) type character?

That is such an awesome article, James! I was loving the description of Joe being introduced with an awesome car chase.... now I have visions of my entire family dressing up in Gatch costumes and going into San Francisco for the premiere.... Big Grin

The way the entire sentence is worded, not just that small piece of it, I believe they mean that, at one point in the movie, a key character will die. As in "Utoland will be attacked at one point in the film, the Ninja Team will go into action at another point in the film, a key character will die at yet another point in the film, and the Firebird will appear at still another point in the film." Not that a key character will die at one point and come back at another.

His name was Mekkel (Meckle in the ADV dub). Bear in mind that, in the original Gatchaman, he was not a former member of the team. That was a BotP invention. Still, that might be the way they intend to take things.

One thing that has surprised me is that as of yet, no one has commented on the part where they say that the name might end up changing from "Gatchaman" to "G-Force." Or do most people find this an unimportant detail?

Won't that be confusing? Isn't Disney or someone doing a G-Force film that's animated animals and nothing to do with Gatchaman?

I had the same thought, Tengu. Since this is a prequel, Sayuri should have a big part... And if there's a focus on how and why the team was formed, then Ken's relationship with his mother should be a player in the film. But, who knows?? With 4 different versions to choose from, plus the director and the writer's own take, it could be something completely different!

Of course it could be Red impulse, with the tragic focus on how hes being a bad father abandoning wife and son when they really need him, in order to go off and save world.

(The subject is a very japanesey one; but like as their attitudes to suicide, like western tastes, they were never afraid to critise someone who did it for selfish reasons)

The Bruckheimer G-Force film is being made by Jerry Bruckheimer Productions and Whamaphram Productions, and is being distributed by Disney.

If Imagi decides they want to use the name "G-Force" instead of "Gatchaman," they'll have to fight for it, pointing to Battle of the Planets and G-Force as the precedents of the name being associated with the franchise (Which would also mean that they'd have to pay Sandy Frank a licensing fee to use the name). Then it would probably be up to the courts to decide who gets the name.

James I just read your newest information. Thanks so much for giving us the link.

I will agree that the whole name issue, is something that stands out in my mind. I for one , would much rather see the name Gatchaman up on the screen, then G-Force. Is there any place we can go to, to tell them our thoughts? Maybe on the mailing list, since I had read sometime ago that they are following it more for the film creation.

You know, changing the name to 'G-Force is actually not a big deal for me, which is why I didn't mention it, James. I would prefer that it be called Gatchaman, but frankly as long as they have the original character names/feel/storylines/look and no Zark, it's not high on my list of issues, KWIM?

Well, it certainly couldn't hurt to post your feelings regarding the name on the BotP Mailing List, and on the IESB site that ran the article, or to send Imagi an e-mail directly via their website. The people in charge of the movie may or may not see it, but at least that way you've made an effort to get your opinion across to them.

Actually I think changing the name would be a bad idea - to the purists out there.

I don't personally care, myself - Hell go with the acronym-fad right now and call it KNT

That damn-well works for me!

G-Force has nothing to do with Gatch, really. I don't get the feel for it, and would half expect Casey Kasem and Janet Waldo to voice ...LOL (sigh, aside from the JL VA's, the BotP actors were the best and most natural sounding team)

Of course, when the US dubbing team get hold of it and destroy it with the current breed of pitiful voice actors, the G-Force title will most definitely fit. Gah, can english-speaking VA's really be any worse? Seriously! Can we PLEASE get someone to dub who doesn't voice-act like they have a giant rod up their ass and THINK they have to read every line with puffed up chests and the "superhero" tone of voice.
