My wife's son-in-law is a Newfie (someone from Newfoundland) so I have gained an appreciation for those from Canada's much maligned Province of Newfoundland (or the "The Rock" as they call it). First some terminology...

Christmas music is everywhere but I thought I would share some Newfie Christmas Music that most probably haven't had a chance to experience. Some of them are funny little tunes, others are more traditional Celtic pieces and one isn't by a Newfie but it is close enough and another is about Newfies but isn't a Christmas song... it is still pretty funny. Wink

DH must have the sound disconnected.

I love to hear carols from different countries. Newfoundland looks pretty from the pic in the encyclopedia.

LOL! Some of the accents in these songs might seem a bit strange to Americans. Newfoundland is a very strange place compared to the rest of Canada. Sometimes Newfies are looked down on as being backwards or uneducated but that isn't fair. Of the Newfies I know and or met in the past, a couple were assholes but the majority of them were very kindhearted who worked as hard as they partied (just like all people). Wink

Oh they must have Irish in them somewhere!

The Outback culture is more like that...

I'll do some reading on Newfoundland now, I have heard of it in passing...it sound interesting. I like to read about interesting places.

Heheheee you should hear some the Aussie Christmas carols just for the accents! Generally they are bush bands that sing them.

I have no family connections to the area. My wife's son-in-law is a Newfie and we get on great. I'm originally from a small Ontario village so in some ways I can relate to the Newfies (except when eating most seafood - I'm allergic to crab *g*).

For the Newfies that live in Ontario (and Toronto specifically), their accents are quite mild for the most part until they get drinking. Then the accent comes out in full force. Smile

One thing I should mention... Newfoundland is the island (called The Rock by its inhabitants) and Labrador is the land that is on the mainland (next to Quebec). Newfoundland and Labrador (that's the official Province name BTW) didn't become a Canadian Province until 1949! They had a referendum about joining Canada and the Yes side won with a narrow vote. There are still some Newfies who think the election was rigged. Wink

LOL...I love the 'tree' thing...but the Newfies aren't the only one that use that pronunciation. You'll find it in Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia...not sure about P.E.I (never been there or the Rock for that matter). I was born in Nova Scotia and one of my favorite musicians is Natalie McMaster. I've seen her in concert and have met her, she's a sweetheart!

Yeah that same guy who brought us "SHE BLINDED ME SCIENCE!" back in the '80's.

Now Natalie is from Cape Breton Island and the accent is closer to a Newfie accent (don't tell em that though!) because of strong Scottish Gaelic influence. If you want to hear mainland Nova Scotian accents all you have to do is watch Trailer Park Boys.

Here they are withAxl Rose singing 'Liquor & Whores'. I refuse to call it 'Guns n Roses', cause it ain't without the other guys!

And yes my Youtube addiction has gotten out of hand again...
