I love RPG games too, though I'm not sure that I have played one on a board game.

i was into hero clix for a while. i like d&d though. i havent heard of talisman yet. might check it out though.

LOL... we were playing version 2, which had the mystery ending. LOL! I'm competitive in my games but up to a point. I never forget that the purpose is to have fun. Winning is always second place when it comes to having fun.

I used to know someone who used to cheat all the time just so he could win (course he never did win because we kept a close eye on him). This was the Collector Card Game Jyhad (before it got its name changed to Vampire) and the excellent On The Edge card game.

I never got into Heroclix but I'm tempted to buy the figures now so we can use them in our Heroscape games (we will write up the stats ourselves) or to use them as miniatures for our superhero RPG games (either Marvel Superheroes RPG or for Villains & Vigilantes).

When it comes to pencil & paper RPGs I'm Old School all the way.

We actually do character sheets on Excel spreadsheets, because PCGen is SUCH a pain. But outside of that, we're ganming with miniatures on mats. It adds such a cool flavor...

DH recently got these templates from Paizo. They show the grid outlines for 'area effects' and have been REALLY handy in combat.

 

We have the ones for cone effects too. Super cool! Nerd

That's pretty cool, TJ.

I'm the opposite though - I rarely use miniatures in my actual RPG games. I find they take a bit away from the role-play aspect and it becomes more a tactical game instead. I like dramatic descriptions for characters instead of counting map squares and checking for AoO. Wink

Course I'm lucky that I have a very visual way of thinking so I can "see" the area in my mind's eye and a piece of scrap paper is all I need for a quick reference or ideally a small chalk/white board for quick establishing sketches.

Different strokes for different folks and all that. Smile

For us, it depends. DH is the combat DM, and I DM everything else. Combat is tactical, although the PCs are VERY creative in their use of spells. We're pretty liberal with magic, and they can come up with some cool stuff. Of course, so do the monsters. Wink

I DM all of the roleplaying stuff, and that is purely in people's heads, although sometimes I have 'notes' or things on scraps of paper to flavor the roleplaying. Once I even tried the 'soak in tea and burn the edges' effect for paper to 'age' it, but it didn't work out very well. Hiding But I like to do a lot of roleplaying, including the silly voices. Big Grin

I like role playing games so when you are in the land of Oz TJ you'll have to give me a better run down on this game...
