Voyager's Valentine

On February 14, 1990, Voyager 1 turned its camera back this way and sent us this picture:




NASA added the circle to highlight the pale blue dot the size of a pixel. Yes, that dot is Earth.

Today, Voyager 1 is beyond the boundaries of our solar system, still sending pictures our way.

Since it's been a couple of years, and since it's almost Valentine's Day, and since I've been binge-watching the Science Channel, I thought I post so that this is back in the shuffle for a little bit!


P.S. Also, I made a mistake when I originally posted this. Voyager 1's cameras were shut off after a "family portrait" of the solar system was taken in order to save energy. However, it's still sending us data. It currently takes about 15 hours to reach Earth. NASA anticipates the Voyager probes will last another 10-15 years before falling silent forever.

Yes. Every Christmas I threaten to stick a photo of Ricardo Montalban on the front door decoration so that I'll have 'The Wreath of Khan.'

Didn't really like the remake so much, although I have to admit I do like that moment when Ben Cumberbatch leans on the fourth wall and says, "My name is... KHAN," and the audience goes, "Gasp!" while Kirk and the Enterprise crew are like, "And...?"

The reboot may be inverting the previous pattern where odd-numbered Star Trek movies were crap, because 1 and 3 in the reboot series are actually pretty good. I'd like to see the Enterprise survive a few movies without being destroyed, though. Destroying the ship just doesn't have the same impact as it did the first time. The first time (in The Search for Spock) it was gut-wrenching, like losing an old friend, but now it's like, "Oh, another one..."
