First, I need to give you a little bit of backstory :
For the past few weeks, I’ve been having to deal with a couple of wounds that have opened on my legs and one that formed on the arch of my left foot. I’ve been going to the local wound care center to take care of them, but the place on my foot still got infected, so I’ve been having the additional joy of taking two antibiotics. (They’re the type of antibiotic that clobber my stomach, but I can’t take any antacid to relieve the queasiness.)
On top of that, I’m still sifting through all the matters of Dad’s estate...which has been slowed down by my older brother. Mind you, it hasn’t been anything particularly nasty; he’s just been passive-aggressive about some matters (like signing papers in a timely manner), and he’s had a more open displays of jealousy than he ever dared to show when Dad was alive. (Let me put it this way: you know how some 3- or 4-year-old kids are jealous of a new baby? Well, that’s the kind of relationship I’ve had with him my entire life...except he’s 19 years older.)
Now that you have the basics, here’s the reason for this thread:
This morning, as I was on the way out the door to go to the wound care center, my niece, Stephanie, showed up. She said she wanted to help sort through the things that were in the storage shed in the back yard. (We hadn’t gotten in there yet, and I knew there were some things that had been damaged in a flood we had over the summer.) I decided to let her work while I was away, but only after she promised me not to push herself too much, since she’d had a recent bout with the shingles.
Before I was finished at the wound center, she sent me a text apologizing for not being able to work as long as she thought she could. Of course, I thanked her for what she was able to do and told her to rest and get herself back to full strength.
It had been a rough day at the center. By the time I got home, I was ready to just go to bed and maybe sleep through the rest of the day. I came through the front door and almost started crying on the spot – Stephanie had put up a Christmas tree and decorated the front room. Even though she was still under the weather, she decided that I could really use a little holiday cheer.
How awesome is that?

EW ... first of all, I'm so sorry to hear about the troubles you're having with your health, and that you're still struggling as regards to your dear Dad's estate! I can completely understand you, since, as you know, I have two brothers, together with their wives, who have been showing such an attitude for, let's say, forever, but whose attitude has worsened ever since my Mum passed away, and my Dad has almost done the same last year ... you know ... since he's the only one left ... aaahh ... babies, like you're saying, but the ones who cause a lot of unnecessary troubles and headaches, apart from the everyday problems everybody surely has!
Please feel free to vent your rant my way, also! You have my email address!
As to your niece ... she's such a darling and an angel! It's rare to find someone like that, nowadays, and I can realise how much a surprise it should have been for you, since her Dad shows a completely, different attitude! I wish I could help in bringing you only a part of that happiness you need during the festive season! I wish to thank her myself for such a thought!
Praying for your full recovery ....
