Midwest torandos

The midwest is being slammed by tornados, especially in Indiana, Tennessee and Kentucky.

I hope all of our members in Indiana are okay.

Has anyone heard from Garnet?

My husband is from the Indianapolis area and we have other friends who still live there. I've been there during one of these outbreaks and I never want to go through that again. Due to high water tables, most houses don't have basements.

In our hotel, they came around to the rooms and asked all the customers to come to the central hallway. Several people, including my husband, went outside to check the situation out. They all came back in to say the tornado was just to the north, very visible. The next day, we saw the damage. The only saving grace was it was farmland.

My thoughts are with the families who lost loved ones and those who lost their homes.

I've been on the fringe of a few too, but not for many years.

The last one I remember, I was riding with my Aunt and Uncle from Iowa to Kenosha, Wisconsin. We were under a watch the whole way and into dinner, when it touched down a few communities north of Kenosha.

The closest one, was when I was about 5, again visiting my Aunt and Uncle and it touched down a few streets from the house. My Uncle "showed" us the remodel he had been doing on the basement, while my Aunt was standing outside the side door watching it, and my father stood at the base of the stairs yelling at her.

EW, thanks for that info. It's quite likely as population centers continue to grow, the more communities will be in the path of those dangerous ones. Kind of like here wild fires out here, since the undergrowth can't be burned off anymore due to housing growth in wild land areas.

Perspective Alters Reality

When I left home for Detroit on Friday, to the south and east was nothing but a dark wall of cloud...Had rain the entire trip with visibility on 30 feet or so at times.

Once here, (Detroit) warm and pleasant...but incredibly heavy winds, gust to 60mph as the cold front moved on through...Yesterday--snow...I'm not kidding you, Currier and Ives sorta snow, and me in my windbreaker/raincoat...

Hubby and kids are fine as the worst of the weather passed east of where we live...but the devestaion is horrible, Henryville, Indiana is gone--dozens have periished...very, very sad....

The security cameras that were in Henryville (Indiana) High School when the March 2 tornadoes hit survived, and the footage was released yesterday. Seeing the images of the school as it was being destroyed by an EF4 tornado is simply jaw-dropping...

Damn, that's scary! Makes me very glad that my neighborhood has tornado sirens, and the house has a basement.

Though you probably have earthquakes to worry about. And on the east coast, there are hurricanes. It seems that no part of North America is safe from a natural disaster of some sort.
