That was definitely me, too. We have a man who appears to hate what is doing, is mean and nasty, yet trusted implicitly by Dumbledore. The whole idea of not only how he got to be that way and why he was there, but so completely trusted even as he was often being dismissed, was what got me hooked on him.
Although, I have to admit that I became intrigued by him in the second movie, when he blasted Lockhart off the duelling dias. Until that moment, I hadn't read the books, but after the movie, I went home and immediately read the four that were out.
And that's how I stumbled into fanfiction, looking for any scrape of news and such about when the fifth book would be out and not being satisfied.
Obsessive/Compulsive? No, not me!

I love how this "How It Should have Ended" gives Snape the starring role -though the Gandalf part sure busted me up!
I stumbled into fanfiction by lurking at Buffy the Vampire Slayer forums around 1999-2000, as there were links/discussions about fics there.
That was followed by Harry Potter -I started reading the series right around the time that Prisoner of Azkaban came out, so I read books 1-3 all in a row, and then waited for the rest.
I started looking for Gatch fanfiction around the time, in early 2007, when I'd finished watching the entire ADV series and was looking for ways to feed my Gatch addiction!
Oddly, I've never really done much fanfiction reading in the LOTR fandom, though I've been obsessed with all the books since I was a kid and eagerly follow the making of all the movies online (currently, the Hobbit ones). Maybe Tolkien is, in my mind, too tough of an act to follow?
