Perhaps we should have a "Cultural day " like they have at school , grab a world map and point where we are from.
actually I started saying that tongue in cheek, but now that i come to think about it, I recall seeing a world map on some internet site forum(heaven which site that was! ) where it showed where on earth their members were from!
Hey Cep, do you know what Im talking about? how cool would it be to finally see which part of Canada, America, England, Australia, etc, we are from?
As for you SJ my darl <<superdamnhugs>> It must be the toughest thing for you to feel so displaced, missing "home" and having to bear with cliches and other misconceptions.
If you know how, pm me here and I'll make sure you get one heck of a package from Aus...you deserve it! Tim Tams and all!
I was googling around to find you some more misconceptions about Australia, and I was shocked to discover just how much more culturally baised WE are towards certain countries! think of Kiwis and sheep and you get my drift, and thats only one country!
Its the reason we cringe when we get overseas stand up comics, who try out our "lingo" . We are ALL, regardless of nationality, fallen victim to "cultural bias" .
Education is the key. Learning to correct those misconceptions regardless of whether they are about americans, Britts, Canadians or us Auzzies to name but a few. One step at a time. 
As for town names, i wish I could live in the astronomy capital of Australia in the Warrumbungle Shire Council....COONABARABRAN!!
I'd like to see how many would be able to say that five times and not get a headache! lol!
