That would make sense. I can't imagine why they had to put the buttons there and not, say, on his back. Unless they were somehow inspired by the mini-robots' self-destruct buttons in episode 6.

I'm wondering now if he's actually a transistor radio, and if one button is "on/off" and "volume" and the other one is "tuning."

Maybe they couldn't put the buttons on his back because that's where the batteries go?

I think CD is right about the rockets. Perhaps (and this is a stretch) the doll originally came with a cape/wings, and the cape covered up the buttons?

A Gatchaman with built-in rockets... Makes me wonder if someone was influenced there by Astroboy.

Though since we've got a Gatchaman with some rather "female" attributes, we've also got a Swan with some rather "manly" shoulders and hips -and one who doesn't want to wear a skirt either, it seems.

She probably would prefer "androgynous Ken" for sure, over the little mini-Ken who's standing in front of her.

Hee, you have to wonder if it's solely design budget issues, or if the companies that manufacture some of these figures barely even look at the characters they're supposedly depicting.

Joining late to this conversation, I can't say anything more than that the dolls in these last pictures are totally wrong ... body shapes, faces, colours, button positioning, and all! I just agree with LB in saying that whoever made them surely didn't know anything about the real characters ... something which I honestly cannot take, since I'm one who really enters into details, especially when trying to copy originals! But then, we can say that we're used even in these days to find imitation products which differ from originals in some, or many ways! The ones we're seeing have so many of these differences and abnormalities that they just look awkward!

And it is those differences that make them collectors items. Maybe even making them worth more than if they were accurate copies. As much as I would prefer to have a perfect copy.
