Ideas for a Gatch/BotP/G-Force comparison video...
|
|
As a "G-Force" fan, one of the, if not the most frustrating thing to deal with is people who keep confusing it with BotP (due to the use of the same footage and the "G-Force" and "Phoenix" terms). I can somewhat tolerate the bashing from those who grew up with BotP (I understand that watching 7-Zark-7 and the "Ready Room" sequences must've been a traumatic experience for many when they were kids....mmm, space burgers...), but to harp on and on about it being the "wrong" version and "an abomination" simply because it isn't the show you remember is just ridiculous. Could you at least bother to read their respective Wiki pages (like the GoS one which I've virtually, single-handedly put together over the last 3+ years) or the descriptions on my YT videos? (BTW yes, all of this comes from comments left on my G-Force related YT videos)
For the longest I've been thinking about creating a comparison video, which showcases the various differences (i.e names, terms, cuts for violence and content) between Gatch, BotP and G-Force. Before I only owned a scant few eps of each series, now I own all of them (GoS legitimately, thanks to a generous fellow Gatch fan who recorded it's first-ever run on Cartoon Network back in '95; Gatch and BotP.........not so legitimately!). I have the content, but I don't think I have the tools (5+ year old PC hanging on by a thread) or the idea of how to best shape all of this. Soon, I won't have the time either, as I'll be starting classes again (and a part-time, woo-hoo!) in a couple of weeks.
The video would serve the dual purposes of educating the boobs who refuse to do their homework, and stick it to those who view BotP with rose-tinted glasses. Seriously, I've been browsing through some BotP eps, and the edits are ridiculous! Where the heck was Jason throughout most of "The Galaxy Girls"? And why did Mark and Jason show signs of dissent then out of nowhere run to rendezvous at Center Neptune in "The Conway Tape Tap"? So yeah, it could be entertaining as well!
So guys, any ideas? For those of you savvy about BotP, which episodes faced the most heaviest cuts and most farfetched re-writes? I can't think of much in GoS, except a couple of times in which on-screen deaths and injuries (i.e Joe/Dirk in Ep. 20) where covered up (or rather, a horrible attempt at) with voiceovers or dialogue stressing that they "got to get them to a hospital!"

Dirk, while I do somewhat understand what you are saying, remember that BotP fans share the frustration.
We hear G-Force and expect BotP. We watch GoS and something seems missing. While the Zark and Ready Room scenes contain some pretty crappy animation and some of the worst lines ever, there are people who are fans of that. The rest of us, use those times as bathroom breaks. We may wear glasses (well some contacts and others have had laser surgery), but most of us left the rose-tint behind.
As for the rewrites, sometimes the BotP script (Zark and all) made more sense then the original. We all have our favorite version, we all have things that we love and hate about all three versions (if we've seen them).
I don't think anyone hear as harped continuously about GoS being wrong, unless it is in a thread comparing the versions and that is too be expected, and there is just as much harping about BotP (and some of it by those who first watched and loved that version).
Although, GoS is my least favorite version of the three. Yes, BotP is my favorite with SNT coming in a very close second. I do appreciate the effort that both you and Candi are putting forth to educate the rest of us on GoS. I'd love see to see the videos that you put out comparing them, particularly if the are true analytical comparison with highlights and lowlights from all three, not trying to put anyone series over the other.

I'd love to chip in, but prior to Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and seeing ADV Films' version of the show, I was never able to get into any version of it. In fact, GoS was also my introduction to Gatchaman, and back when me and my brother first saw it, we thought the show sucked. This was back in 1995. Maybe it's just because I wasn't the big anime geek I am today back then. The same way I thought about GoS back then I also thought about Sailor Moon back then, and so much time has passed, and Sailor Moon is one of my top 10 favorite animes now, and has been since my late teens. I didn't know about BOTP until either 2002 or 2004. since I wasn't the big anime geek I was now back in the 90's, I decided to give BotP a crack and watched the first episode. I just couldn't get into it. And most of the time it was running I was doing other stuff and not really paying attention to what was going on. It wasn't until I played Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and started watching the ADV Films version that the show finally came through to me, and now look at me, I've been hooked on it all year. However if I was forced to choose either BOTP or GoS, I think I'd pick GoS, because I don't have the grudge against I had back in my early child hood anymore, and have grown to like it, because I'm not as closed minded and immature as I was back in the mid 90's. Plus it was more faithful to the original version of Gatchaman. I'm still pissed that one of my favorite parts from episode 6 in the original isn't in the GoS version though.

Being here, I've learned to appreciated it more and learned more of the history behind my favorite cartoon. |

I'm with Amethyst on this one. I was not the fan I am today of Gatch or all it's incarnations, or of anime as a whole when GoS was on CN, so I really was the part of the "casual cartoon fan" demographic when it premiered. I remember when I first saw it, I had the same reaction though - "WTH is this?? These aren't the voices or music I remember!" Although I knew "something" wasn't right, I never realized, at that time, that this was a completely separate series from BoTP - I thought maybe I had simply forgot what BoTP was really like since I was so young when it was on. Fast forward all these years later, and now I understand. But, back then, people who weren't into the fandom didn't. Remember, we didn't have internet like we do today, so we couldn't Google to find out the backstory of the series!
Also, about people ragging on the series itself - comparing it to BoTP - here's a slightly different perspective... How did the fans of the original Gatchaman feel when they saw BoTP? I'll guarantee they had the same reaction! At least going from BoTP to Gatch, for the most part, we had a pleasant surprise. But imagine being a Gatch fan, expecting to basically see Gatch in English with a new voice-over cast, then getting BoTP. I'm sure they felt the same way you do with GoS!
