Hi all!
Don't forget, most of Joe's cyborg heroics were done when he was away from the rest of the Ninja Team, so they weren't there to actually witness the more obvious moments. There was certainly evidence of what had happened, such as Joe's burned gloves when he took the electrical charge through his body, but nothing to conclusively point to his being a cyborg.
You have to realize that, at the time those episodes were first airing, the audience did not know that Joe was a cyborg. That detail wasn't revealed to viewers until Gatchaman II #24 aired. Joe's strange abilities were all part of a mystery meant to draw in the viewers, and if they had the Ninja Team demanding answers to questions like, "Gee, Joe, why didn't that electricity fry you to a cinder?," it would have ruined the mystery.
If anyone on the Ninja Team is guilty of overlooking the obvious, it would have to be Jun. In Gatchaman II #16, she's there when Joe destroys the gigantic tank, and doesn't follow up on it.
Actually, looking at the planning for the series, Jun wasn't intended to drop the ball like that. In their outline for the progression of events in the series, they intended for the following to occur:
"Meanwhile, Gatchaman frequently harbors suspicions about Joe's wonderous actions. (Acting as if he wasn't a member of the Ninja Team)
Along with the viewers, they'll wonder if this is Joe? At the height of interest, Jun will accidentally see through to Joe's true self.
Though Jun has seen Joe's true self, she doesn't tell Ken or anyone else, she instead helps him from the shadows."
This situation wouldn't have lasted long, as soon afterwards, Dr. Raphael was supposed to reveal that Joe was a cyborg, and, "Joe's sorrow is set aside."
So, the story in episode #16 was likely intended to be the one where Jun discovered Joe's secret, but that idea was dropped for whatever reason. Perhaps it was a result of Tatsunoko receiving word that Fuji TV wanted to extend the run of the series, but I don't know for certain.
James

I see where you're coming from, but in spite of all its... misquided changes to Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter, Eagle Riders has given me a chance to at least see many episodes from the second half of Gatch II (as well as some Gatch F) that I doubt I would have yet visually experienced otherwise, as I'm currently not prepared to pay for the complete, all-Japanese versions. So, Eagle Riders does have some value in my eyes, and it has sort of grown on me too, in a campy, corny kind of way. |

I agree LB, until or unless they sub or dub Gatch II and Fighter, I will not be buying either series. So Eagle Riders is the only way I will get to watch the eps.
