Well, keep in mind that 2/3 of my immediate family are children under the age of 8. All I had to do was watch Gatch and they sat down to watch with me. Bingo! Instant Gatch interest. Wink

DH watched BOTP, but doesn't quite get my 'level' of interest. Still, he prefers it as a hobby compared to, say, shopping. ROFL 2

I know how you feel Gogirl.
My brother thinks I am crazy, I think he pretends he never even watched the show, he says he does not remember it at all.

As for my parents and friends, well I have kept fairly quiet there, although I do slip out with a few comments occasionally and find myself brushing them off hoping my friends do not think I am crazy. Or at least any crazier than they all ready think I am.

CD, I find the betrayal of my bother the most bitter of all. He is a rat fink on that one. But as soon as my nephew (his son) gets a little older, I plan on subverting him to my point of view on Gatch/BotP.

The rest of my friends, I don't actually tell them much. I just ask if they remember it and if they liked it and I get weird stares and just change the subject. I don't even get into the fact that I spend almost all of my free time these days reading fics, watching eps, etc. Although I did sort of discuss this with my cousin and accidentally got her hooked into Star Trek fanfics. I didn't warn her about the slash though . . . .Devil1

I don't think that's for me to answer, but certainly the ability to mold young minds and subconsciously impact their future interests/desires/lifestyles as adults is very compelling. Wink

As for the slash thing... that's bad. Heck, the very term 'slash' is because of Kirk/Spock fics!!!!!!

That's what I did! I still remember my older brother and sister changing the channel on me, so many times, years ago, when I was trying to watch BOTP. I have since turned my sister's son (now 12) into a Gatch fan.

My BF is aware of my Gatch obsession (and my Joe obsession.) I managed to get him to sit down once and watch two Gatch episodes with me. He said he liked it, but has never shown any real interest since. I think his attitude towards my obsession is somewhere between "well, I've always known she was strange" and "well, she could have far worse hobbies." He knows I write fics but has never asked to read any, and I haven't offered either. I really don't ever say much about it to non-Gatch friends or family -you either "get it" or you don't; I think it's hard to make converts out of adults.

Who is trying to convert (adults at least) I am just trying to find people with similar interests that I can chat to face to face rather than across a forum or IM.

And as a primary school teacher I have started trying to convert a class full of 6 year olds one class at a time. I am not sure I have 23 new budding members to our club, but at least I have created 23 children who may recognize the film title when, and if, the movie comes out, and ask their parents to take them to see it. Funny you should mention that, CD! Guess who is going to teach her students about writing Fan Fiction this year? We've already talked about it, and the kids are soooo excited! They want to do crossovers, too...

I'm going to edit one of my fics and take it in to share it with them...should be interesting...

Seriously, though, I think that introducing fan fic into your curriculum is a fantastic idea. What a great way to get the kids to use their imagination and work on their writing and reading skills all at the same time. WTG, Springie!! thumbsup2

Thanks! It was funny...I went through my fics looking for ONE fic that would work to read to the kids...and there was NOTHING! So I just printed off and edited snippet...and I'll TELL them the story in my own *edited* words...LOL

I also printed off a character sheet so I can introduce them to the characters! dance

Springie I love your idea of having your students write fanfic. That's a very creative way to get them to write about something they are already connected to.
(With my curriculum, the closest I can get is the manga edition of Hamlet.)

Here is some online Hamlet manga:

manga hamlet

The actual play in the version above starts at Act I, but the Introduction is worth a laugh. There are traditionally published editions too. In fact, there is a whole Manga Shakespeare series.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no Birdstyle version of Hamlet yet. I'm not sure which birdie I would give the title role to. If you go with the idea that Hamlet is insane, then Joe's brand of crazy might fit the bill. However, if you find that Hamlet is more calculating then crazed, it might be Ken's role. Tough call. Either way, the other gets to be Laertes - Hamlet's best friend who eventually ends the play in the best and most angst-ridden sword fight in all of the Shakespearean canon.

I too remember my brothers trying to torment me by changing channels etc. on me. Guess thats when my Condor tendencies started to show through.


Now I must say that I do mention it to family, but not in any depth cause they only shake their heads. Still my nieces see my point of view! At least with liking Anime!
