What I do, when eating alone, is pick a restaurant that has a bar, as nearly every restaurant will let you eat at the bar if you want to, and I find I feel a lot less self conscious sitting there alone than at a table, and often you can talk to the bartender, or other solo people at the bar. |

Unfortunately for me I do not drink, so I do not go into bars.

I'm single too, but I have gotten very comfortable eating alone - I think because I travel for work a lot and it just started happening. I bring a book, or I write, or sometimes just people watch and make up stories about what is going on at other tables. Sometimes I can even eavesdrop (!).
But I'm less comfortable going to a movie alone . . . too bad we can't make virtual movie dates!

Most restaurants I go to, the bar is in the same room as the tables/booths, and no rule says you can't order a diet coke (or pepsi  ) or a coffee!
