I am guessing I got my one or two issues at the store, but I can't clearly recall. What I do recall is being frustrated over how badly drawn it was. I was a HUGE fan of Battle of the Planets back then, and even as an 8 year old it was obvious that these artists and writers didn't get the show. The adventures were sort of fun, but they didn't hold a candle to even my least favorite episodes. I believe the issue I had (maybe number 5) had to do with a jungle and some robot plants or something.
Anyhow, like you, there was really no BOTP material available for us other than an occasional comic book or maybe a lunch box. Had there been, I'd have been begging for it as well. As it stands, I was a creative little boy and would make construction paper wings and tape them on to whatever figure I had and pretend. I used Star Wars, Buck Rogers, and The Black Hole figures for G-Force! I would make the Phoenix out of Legos, or once I even made a cardboard one that I colored with kids paint. It was cool back then, though we may all laugh at it now if it were possible to see it again. I remember, I even had a die-cast metal Shogun Warrior who reminded me a lot of Zoltar! Ah, those were the days!
Sadly, I don't see kids using their imaginations like that anymore. Using your imagination was the absolute BEST! It was so much fun!

Buck Rogers, Wonder Woman, Battlestar Galactica, The Incredible Hulk, The Six Million Dollar man...those were the days for TV! I had a lot of the figures and such, but not many playsets for them. I would build my own bases and create my own stories, sometimes in the correct universe and sometimes using my figures for other ideas...like Battle of the Planets for instance. I drew a picture of the Luminous One on paper, colored it, cut it out and taped it to the inside of a frisbee and propped it up on the wall. Tada, it was all I needed!
I remember debating whether Zoltar was a girl when I was in 3rd grade with a friend of mine who also loved the show. The Alien Bigfoot episode was disturbing to me. I mean, Zoltar might be a girl?????? It was a scary thought. I didn't know what to think! That was too far out there for my naive little mind. How funny, knowing what we know now!
quote: | On the other hand, I went outside last weekend to do some gardening and my neighbour was packing his truck for a weekend trip, he had his two grandsons over. They had bought a new electric toy car for the boys to ride in. But what were they doing? Playing "airplane" with the box the toy came out of. He walked away shaking his head. I thought it was great to see! And then imagined a young Eagle or Condor doing such a thing. |

Sounds like there is hope yet!!
