In that episode, Ryu's identity as a member of the Science Ninja Team remains a secret from his father and Seiji. They believe that he is, as Seiji puts it, a "subcontractor" who does work for the Ninja Team. So, while they know that Ryu isn't a lazy coward, they do not know that he is G-5.

I so wish to have the chance to re-watch Gatch II after not having seen this second series for so much time since my childhood! I never tried to acquire Gatch II episodes ... I only interested myself in the Gatch F ones! I too have thought that Ryu's image in front of his father's and brother's eyes had been redeemed, them discovering that he was a member of the SNT. I must have misunderstood the story and it must also have become more blurred as time passed by. I was so sure that they then knew that he was G-5 ... or maybe my mind wanted to think like that! Now, I also am questioning myself if, maybe, that's what have been indicated in the Italian version and dialogue.

You're more than right, TJ! Gatch II is a very good series ... as all the whole Gatchaman trio, IMHO! Gatch F was the series which I recall seeing most frequently when it was aired periodically. It has left its print in my heart, especially as it was mostly focused on my dear Eagle, even if it also had its defects!
I've looked into the episode list of Gatch II in Wikipedia. I don't know how much it's accurate but this is what's written about Episode 30 of Gatch II:

Because his father is hurt, Ryu gets into the Horned Tank and goes back to his native fishing-village. However, in the sea around the village, Galactor plans to destroy a gas chamber and let the land sink into the sea. When Gel Sadra sees the G-5 heading towards the village, she thinks that the Science Ninja Team got wind of her plan. Ryu has indeed noticed some strange bubbles and Nambu tells him that he will send the God Phoenix to investigate. Gel Sadra charges two assassins with infiltrating the village and aiming at Ryu. Opposing the attacking Galactor, Ryu pretends to be weak and gets out of the difficult situation because the assassins start to doubt whether he really is a member of the Science Ninja Team.
However, shortly thereafter, his father and younger brother are abducted by Galactor. Ryu follows them and finds out that a petroleum tanker at sea is actually the Galactor base. In order to save his family, Ryu sneaks into the base. But when they are used as shields, Ryu gets into a difficult situation again. When his father refuses to serve as bait, Ryu gets tears in his eyes. But before Gel Sadra can force Ryu to reveal himself, the Science Ninja Team's submarine breaks into the base. Ken and the others have detected the gas chambers, and thereafter the base, and come charging in. With their help, Ryu is able to save his family. But they know now that he's a member of the Science Ninja Team.

He must have had some type of backup story about his work and his whereabouts. It's not easy to hide everything from whom is closest to you ... you could easily mess up things by having many points to cover. It could be rather confusing! Having, at least, the reassurance that you won't make any error when mentioning, or when being found at the place you're mostly associated with would be most comforting!
