Yes, the writers knew Ryu's parents were alive. In the planning stages, they had a chart listing information regarding each of the characters, and under Ryu's "Family" column, they state, "Both parents are in good health. They're fishermen. He is devoted to them." There is no mention of Seiji.

You're taking it too far. The word you're looking for is "Shako," which is a mantis shrimp.

They simply added the "ra" to the end of the name to make it sound more menacing.

Cool! I've learned something new today -I'd never heard of mantis shrimp, before.

TJ, the BOTP comments were too funny (as usual)...you always crack me up with your "snarky Zark" comments!! pound

This was a great episode for Ryu...especially toward the end of the ep. For once, we saw Joe completely out off character (back peddling) as the goofy one and Ryu as the "straight man". Ryu even took charge of the "red button"! That signifies that Joe really does respect Ryu when the chips are down.

And I always loved the scene where Ken and Jun are in the mountains together. I found it interesting that Ken was asking for her advice about the way he acted (I think he has done that in another episode but i may be wrong- just can't think of the example right now).

This scene is what made me think that the two of them were closer than we realized, and that Jun is the one Ken would talk to if he was feeling insecure or had a problem. Now, if only we had seen them get even closer...*swoon*

I hadn't thought about it before, but you're right. Joe and Ryu really do switch roles, here. But I'm glad they switch back, as Joe really doesn't do well playing the 'funny man'.

I suspect he backpedaled partly becuase of Jun's reprimand, but also partly because he realized he was over the line. Joe's just as sensitive about his family as any of them.

This ep does not answer the question of where Utoland City is.

It does point up a difference between now and the 1970s. Ryu lives far enough from his parents that they don't visit and only know that he works at a marina. He takes a train to his home village in an upcoming episode.

In this episode, Seiji travels alone to find Ryu and tell him about his father. Seiji can't be much more than 10 years old. Nowadays, at least in the US, children under 15 are not considered capable of going anywhere alone. And here's Seiji, getting on a train to see his big brother and pour on the guilt. (Remember that mother who let her son travel the subway alone, I think it was last year? People set up a holler. But there was a time when that was not unusual.)

They were at Nambu's villa, which is technically not in Utoland. It may be that the distance difference was just enough that Seiji was able to come and visit.

If we remember the map James provided, Nambu lives on a peninsula just outside the city, and Ryu lives at the marina across the bay.

It's possible that, since the events in The God Phoenix Reborn, Ryu and Seiji traded some letters or cards. So the boy knows where Ryu lives and works.

(The sticking point is that the imagery suggests that Ryu is on Nambu's property, not at the marina.)

The problem is that mass media make it hard to maintain perspective. We humans spent our entire history in smallish groups. 500 is about the maximum number of people anyone can claim to know, and 30 seems to be the optimum. Our technology has grown faster than our ability to really cope with it.

There are dangers in the world, but they won't be dealt with by wanting to federalize every crime that makes headlines, or expanding childhood, and either overdoing rules and regulations, or trying 'one size fits all' penalties, or whatever other 'solutions' people propose.

Why is that a problem? There's no reason to assume that Seiji hadn't gone to Ryu's home first, found him gone, and went to Nambu's in his search for him after that.
