LOL ... that's what I was used to do! My mum was a professional tailor and I so relied on her for any of my sewing needs, including self-designed clothing. She always wanted me to learn but I was spoiled by finding things ready after having ordered them and designed them myself! Fortunately enough I have learnt some basics which eventually came very handy! When there comes a time when there's noone to turn to you have to inevitably manage things by yourself, especially when you have kids and a husband depending on you! And then the cycle repeats itself ... we tend to spoil those depending on us as we were spoiled by our parents ... am I right, Amy?!

My mother was a professional tailored dressmaker for many years. Funnily enough, it wasn't from her that I learned to sew - she was a shocker of a teacher.
I have a gorgeous sewing machine but just don't have room .... er well I do now. My computer desk is empty now I have a laptop so the machine can go there.....
But no cutting out room.
Hate cutting out - is a phobia of mine. But sewing itself - love it.
I'm best at hand sewing (being an embroiderer for over 30 years now) and my best friend and I have a deal with our costuming - she does the cutting out and much of the straight sewing and I do all the hand work (which is a lot considering we do mostly historical re-enactment costumes - no visible machine stitching to be seen!)

I'm just like you, Maddy! Even if I might be considered as a very patient person when it comes to crafts, I'm not that patient with the "preparation work" in sewing, cutting being one of the "must do" things! I'm more keen on the finishing work and touches ... but then everything must be done from the beginning to the end to obtain a good final product ... it's something I cannot escape!
