I've studied symbolism in a variety of different cultures, and medieval artwork is particularly well-known for its symbolism. DaVinci was merely building on a very old tradition.

Now if you really want to get into interesting symbolism, I know a number of books that you'd absolutely love. One is about the mystery of Rennes-le-Chateau in France. I believe my father has the book (it's been a while since I read it and the name escapes me now), but it deals with treasures, architectural symbolism, Mary Magdalene and religious orders like the Cathars and Knights Templar.

Some that are much more embedded in esoteric theories deal with people channelling energies and psychically examining the stone circles around Britain. The book I read on that ("Spirits of the Stones", by Alan Richardson) absolutely blew my mind--because it made so much sense.

I love talking about this type of stuff--it's one of my main interests. Can't wait for you to start picking my brain!
