Oh wow! They're remaking Evangelion! How exciting! NOT!
The fact that this show has the legendary status it has is sickening. And now they're remaking it! I was at another anime forum just now, and somebody made a thread about the remake, and the admin of that forum denounced it saying that it was overrated and depressing, and the thread starter got all defensive and said no it wasn't, and that it was quote "very interesting, both in content, and its enlightening discussion on Judeo-Christian metaphors". The hell it is. And there's blasphemy in it too. And Asuka's a slut. So are Rei and Misato. I have a tendency to back the guy on that forum who denounced it up, but I'm afraid. The only reason I'm doing it here is because of all the good people I know who love me here. Come and get me, Evangelion fan boys/girls/whatever

The ending of the original was complete WTF for me.
Everyone had too many issues. I wanted to like Shinji, but he whined too much. But I definiterly loathed Gendo Ikari. (Trust me: makes Kentaro Washio Father of the Decade.)
I didn't have any problem with the imagery or use of Christian imagery.

My opinion of Evangelion is fairly similar! Yeah, I often wanted to give Shinji a good smack. Misato, and even Asuka, annoyed me a lot less. "Weird but interesting" is how I might sum it up as a whole. I wasn't smitten but I didn't consider the time spent watching all 26 episodes to be a waste.
Everything is a metaphor. That's the entire idea behind most stories--retelling what we already know in a different way because it's familiar and comfortable.
Religious themes? Someone will always be offended by something, regardless of how subtle (Spongebob is gay, he holds his pink friend's hand!) or obvious (The Last Temptation of Christ). Same shit, different media.
Never cared for Evangelion. It only earned it's "hyped" status because it was one of the early animes to make it to the West without being too terribly bastardized.
I know what I like and what I don't, and what I like usually isn't mainstream. Except maybe for Hellsing, I love me some crazy vampires.
