Hard to believe that those commercials were for NTT-East's at-the-time new high speed internet service, isn't it? But, that's all that they were for. The idea was that you would go to the website listed in the ads (Which, sadly, was around only until the campaign ended). The site was filled with flash pages with the Ninja Team telling you how wonderful the new high speed service was and links for how to sign up for it. To make things more interesting, the site also had some background information on the Ninja Team members and a few games you could play. If you were able to complete the games, you won downloads for screensavers and wallpaper.
Yes, the name of the boy band who played the Science Ninja Team in the live action commercials is SMAP. The two SMAP commercials actually form the first half of the story, and the animated commercials form the latter half of the story (If you can call anything that runs 90 seconds total a story). The second of the SMAP spots and the first of the animated spots actually cover the same material, allowing you to see two versions of the same sequences.
A third animated spot was planned and storyboarded, but never produced. It would have featured the Ninja Team vehicles in action.
And, while it's just a personal opinion, I think that the bonus material on the Australian BotP Box Sets blows the UK Box Set out of the water. They have things like alternative versions of a couple episodes, a G-Force pilot episode, a great audio commentary by Jameson Brewer, a nice selection of BotP commercials, and more. It can be more of a pain because buying 5 Australian sets is more expensive than buying the single British set, but I'd say it's worth the effort.
