Fantastic combination of the thrill of control and the lack of confidence.
Like TJ, I'm not surprised at all.
And I think this kind of thing is currently happening in South Korea.
On this weekend, the vice chief of KBS(the largest broadcasting center/run by Government) revealed the Government's INSTRUCTIONS upon the ferry disaster.(more than 300 people died/ 250 were highschool students) It included "Do not criticize President Park", "Do not allow the reporters to wear black clothes", "Do not blame the coast guard police", "Take all blames to the ship crews and the captain", "When the victim's family yell at President Park or the other high officials, edit the scenes so that the news viewers will not hear the mess."
During past month, I couldn't concentrate on my works because of the ferry disaster. When I first saw the news flash- the ship was tilted about 50 degrees, I thought that it was not that serious one. It was sunny day morning, the sea was calm, and the spot was only 3km (1.85 mile) from the port. It seemed that it took one or two hours until the ship completely upset.(and it did) So I surely expected all the people would be rescued.
Ah... I really don't know how to understand you this situation.
When I accessed to a internet community late at night, I was completely shocked by the news delivered by the independent internet medias.(Most of them are run by fired journalists and reporters.)
When I saw a man who was saying "Survivors are not profitable but though we're trying our best, so you guys do not disturb us.", I couldn't believe my eyes and ears. The coast guard police was doing nothing, they handed their duty to the private company which was run by retired officials... When I turned on the TV, the reporters are lying that the government was trying every possible means for the victims.
I really don't know what to say first.
Which one should I start? I don't know. So I'll not say anything more about it.
19 days ago, I went to CNN.com to see how foreign media report about the ferry disaster.
On the main page, I saw a news article which seemed a great copy of official news materials provided by Korean Government. I was so upset and I wrote a comment. After that I encouraged Korean young people to vote for my comment so that the CNN reporters could see my opinion.

After I had supper, I accessed the page again to see how many people voted for.
Then I found a long reply to my comment.
He said he partly agree with me, but he cleverly hid his true message- President Park should not be blamed.
Many Korean internet users suspected him as an agent of NIS.(Korean CIA).
You may laugh at my words, but the internet community I go is one of the largest one in Korea, especially among young adults. And NIS agents are still monitoring all the contents of it. Several NIS agents were sentenced guilty, because they uploaded nasty rumors upon Mr.Moon(the most powerful candidate against Miss.Park).
BTW...Whenever I renewed the page, I could see more and more voters.
But suddenly strange thing happened.
When I finally renewed the page before leaving home to go to the market, I find my comment disappeared.
This time I was not upset.
I was so scared.
Strolling a cart in a mart, I felt like someone was watching my back.(Of course actually not.......really??)
Finally I led him to the not crowded place, I told him I'm too afraid of the invisible hands, sobbing. My husband encouraged me that I should write a complaining mail to CNN desk, restoring my comment was the only way we could do for the victims for now.
During the last presidential election, I posted my writing on a famous political internet debate place. And it was hang on the main page of the second largest internet portal site in Korea. It was spread all over SNS and internet communities.
I criticized Miss.Park she doesn't even have the right to be a presidential candidate. A murderer's child can be a judge, but if he is proud of his father's sin, he must not be given even a chance. (Miss.Park's father was a cruel dictator)
After that, I found my e-mail was hacked. An unknown IP accessed to my account. I chased the IP, but it was a false one. What is more whenever I use my phone, I heard some noises. There was possibility that someone was hearing it.
After several days, that noises disappeared.
I told my husband these things, he said I'm too nervous about it. He said e-mail hacking is frequently done by Chinese, and noises on the phone might be caused it was too old.
BR, I really envy you to live in the US.
I envy you who live in a country which do not forbid to criticize the government.
Once I lived in that one, I took it for granted. It was so right, I didn't think it should be protected.
Once I had a president who said "If people can release their stress by fooling me, I can gladly accept it and it is my duty, too."
When he was nearly impeached 11 years ago, I said to my friend at a bar ramming a piece of rime into a Corona bottle- "I wish he would be kicked off right now so that the election day will be before the vacation!" (presidential election day is holiday)
I was a freshman in a university, I clearly remember the moment cause I felt myself as a mature adult for the first time- sitting at a dim lit bar, drinking a beer, even talking about politics!! How ridiculous, my face is still reddened whenever I recall that moment.
Now he is laying under the cold ground(suicide), the democracy once I had was killed too.
Well, I'm still not arrested, I'm not hung on a rope upside down, my head is still in the air not in a bathtub...Oh I can say the democracy in Korea is still breathing. Ugh...
If Chinese want to see uncut Big Bang Theory on the TV, they must bleed.
I do not sure when it would be.
But I can sense mine is coming soon.

Continue to fight the good fight. I would have been carted off long ago, were I in your country. What it takes is enough people, with guns, to get mad enough at the situation to do something about it. I bet if 100,000 armed, angry citizens stormed the Capitol In D.C., hung the corrupt, and burned the building to the ground, it would change things. I cannot tolerate injustice, it makes me seethe.
What I hate more, however, is everyone complaining about how hot it is in the room, yet no one gets up to turn the air conditioner on...
