I can't speak for youth football, but for baseball (which is not usually played in the rain because the balls get too heavy and leads to arm injuries), too much rain is when the field is too wet for play to continue safely. I.e, (for baseball, the ball is getting too wet), the turf (grass or dirt), is too slick, and putting players at risk of injury.
Many of us joke about the times when we were kids and we were allowed to do many things that we aren't now. Many times I agree with that. However, if you happen to be that one kid in a hundred or a thousand that gets the critical injury in the rain (or anything) and you lose a season or more because something wasn't safe enough, is it really so silly? Injuries that can affect a season or more can happen to any athlete at any age or level, do we really want to increase that risk for kids because youth sports no longer have time for rainouts?
Please, don't misinterpret, I'd be one of the first to say, it's only a little drizzle and the kids won't melt. And I've been at games where, I've told the coach that I'm sitting in the car to keep score so that the book is legible. So I understand the competitive nature of we need to get the game in at all costs, but it doesn't hurt to step back once in a while and wonder, what the costs are.
Hope the current systems come through weaker than they are, and Becky, I hope they don't affect the games. Does the school have a freshman squad that plays Thursday with JV and Varsity on Friday? So many of our games out here are being moved to Satuday afternoon because of night time problems in some areas. Of course, we also don't have a lot of schools out here with Freshman squads, they are kind of hit and miss. The urban areas seem about 50/50 and the rural areas are even less than that.
