And the appliances always seem to break after the warranties expire. |

I don't know if it's really true, but our washing machine repairer once told me that, today, certain appliances are manufactured with a predisposed lifespan equivalent to their actual guarantee in order to make us buy a new one every time an appliance breaks down to a certain extent, thus enabling a stable cycle of production and sales of companies. He has also told me that, with the technology of nowadays, they can easily manufacture appliances that are literally unbreakable, being able to counteract everyday wear and tear, but they do not do so as it could easily kill the economy and obligate companies to shut down when less appliances have to be bought in order to replace the old ones! What he has told me does really make sense, sometimes! |

Nothing's 'unbreakable', but in some cases it is possible to make a very long-lived appliance. Kirby Vacuums being one example. (Two kids, two adults, four cats, three years and the thing's still trucking.) But a lot of people are more centered on what'd good for them then on what's better for the world at large. It's not so much one big conspiracy as a thousand tiny ones aimed to feed the greed of those involved. (Enron, anyone? They didn't make anything but paupers, but the greed principle applies.)
Maybe it is Galactor...
