OOC: My trick is I didn't resize the avatar. What I do is create a fixed size square selection area of 180 x 180 pixels and then click on the image to get the area I want. Then I crop the unwanted area leaving just the avatar image. If the original image is much larger than 180 px then I do resize it down so I can get the right amount of area. I hope that makes sense.
