Nice avatar, Springie! (Hubba hubba!)

Kritter -- they do offer that treatment here, but I'm not a candidate for it because I don't have any circulation problems. (Once again a good thing's turning out to be a bad thing!) With circulation problems, oxygen doesn't get to the wounded area, preventing the heating process. Using the hyperbaric chamber forces oxygen into the wounded tissue.

Well, this past week has seen a slight setback, something weird, and me actually feeling sorry for my insurance provider.

Shortly after I resumed the regular treatment, I started feeling under the weather and my leg started gushing. (The setback.) Then, when the visiting nurse removed the bandages, we found that the bandages over the wound on my leg had turned purple -- it looked like someone had poured grape Kool-Aid on my leg. (The weirdness.) While I did have some grape Kool-Aid the day before, I didn't drink THAT MUCH!! When I told the folks at the Wound Center about it, they all had the same reaction: "Huh. I've never heard of that happening."

But there was a reason for the increase in fluid and my feeling as if the GodPhoenix had landed on me -- I'd picked up another infection. So the good doctor decided to haul out the big gun to deal with it: he prescribed Zyvox. If it was a firearm, it would be a cross between an elephant gun and a .45 Magnum.

However, there were two things that kept me from starting the treatment right away. First, many pharmacies don't keep Zyvox in their regular stock, so it had to be special-ordered. Second, insurance companies normally woon't pay for it. So my pharmacy and the Wound Center teamed up to convince my insurance provider to pay. (The insurance finally gave in.)

Once I found out why insurance usually doesn't cover this stuff, I had to admit that I could see their reasoning. (You might want to brace yourself against something sturdy before reading on!) One pill of Zyvox costs $165.54. That means my ten-day supply (20 pills) cost $3310.78.

The Zyvox seems to be helping; the place on my leg has dried up again, and I'm feeling a bit better. (Considering how much that dang stuff costs, it better work!)

Sorry about the back set. Purple drainage just from a little koolaid-way strange. Hopefully the high powere antibiotics will clear once and for all. I get how expensive meds are. One single shot for my knee was $1800.00, fortunately coverd by insurance but only once every 18 months so it will be another 7 months before I can get another. Hug Hugs to you. Hope things continue to get better.

Yikes! I'm glad it's helping ... we need to make some kind of wound care BINGO for you. (When I start getting a bunch of weird medical results I start calling it healthcare BINGO). Not sure which letter/number purple drainage would be!

No wonder insurance costs have gone up if companies are charging that much for medicines. I've been told Humira, one of the medicines that started out for RA but is now used for other things, is very expensive: as much as $1500 a month.

There's only one company that makes Zyvox, and they have all the patents, so they can charge anything they want in the U.S. And, since the attitude in Washington D.C. is that corporations are people whereas actual people aren't....

Dear EW.

I'm so sorry to hear your condition.
Did your insurance company decide to cover all the costs of the pills?
I hope there would be no further infection on your leg.

Posted by ElectricWhite on 18-07-2014 at 16:29:

rachel -- thanks for the well wishes! Yes, the medicine is being paid for by the insurance -- it just took some extra work and a refusal to take "no" for an answer from my doctor and the pharmacy where I get my medicines from.

Yeah for doctors who care enough about their patients to fight for them! Glad you were able to find one.
