That would make sense. I can't imagine why they had to put the buttons there and not, say, on his back. Unless they were somehow inspired by the mini-robots' self-destruct buttons in episode 6.

If those are buttons to press the rockets, they're in a horrible place!!!!!

I have to agree with you there TJ. No one has given another suggestion of what they might be though.

Amethyst, all these close-up images in this thread make me shudder.

I'm wondering now if he's actually a transistor radio, and if one button is "on/off" and "volume" and the other one is "tuning."

Maybe they couldn't put the buttons on his back because that's where the batteries go?

Posted by clouddancer on 14-04-2011 at 12:58:

I would hate to think where the speakers are then, but that is a good suggestion.

I think CD is right about the rockets. Perhaps (and this is a stretch) the doll originally came with a cape/wings, and the cape covered up the buttons?

A Gatchaman with built-in rockets... Makes me wonder if someone was influenced there by Astroboy.

Though since we've got a Gatchaman with some rather "female" attributes, we've also got a Swan with some rather "manly" shoulders and hips -and one who doesn't want to wear a skirt either, it seems.

OMG!!!! Eek That Swam looks like a women's drill sergeant! A stereotyped Eastern European women's gym teacher!

She's certainly ready to go out with androgynous Ken!!!!!

We think alike -I had "East German female Olympic athlete circa the 1970s" in my head. Laugh2

She probably would prefer "androgynous Ken" for sure, over the little mini-Ken who's standing in front of her.

Hee, you have to wonder if it's solely design budget issues, or if the companies that manufacture some of these figures barely even look at the characters they're supposedly depicting.

Did you notice that her boots and gloves are pink?

The Condor next to her looks a little feminine, too, especially in the face. Plus his(?) birdstyle is too red.

It might not be a COndor. It might be a reverse color Jinpei.

Yes, but that didn't seem important beside her overly masculine appearance!

Joining late to this conversation, I can't say anything more than that the dolls in these last pictures are totally wrong ... body shapes, faces, colours, button positioning, and all! I just agree with LB in saying that whoever made them surely didn't know anything about the real characters ... something which I honestly cannot take, since I'm one who really enters into details, especially when trying to copy originals! But then, we can say that we're used even in these days to find imitation products which differ from originals in some, or many ways! The ones we're seeing have so many of these differences and abnormalities that they just look awkward!

And it is those differences that make them collectors items. Maybe even making them worth more than if they were accurate copies. As much as I would prefer to have a perfect copy.

Not quite CD, but very close! Here's a page talking about that toy, with yet another creepy image of the full figure in a link at the end.

http://www.gatchamangoods.com/Missfire.html

"Missfire" indeed.

Posted by UnpublishedWriter on 16-04-2011 at 23:16:

Well, for those fans who want a 'butch' Swan or a 'metrosexual' Eagle, there are toys out there for them.

Snicker.

I wonder if that missile-firing Ken is the same as one I thought I recalled in one of James's posts on Ken toys? Wasn't there one with missile boobs there?

Thanks for posting that link, Jason!

From the link:

quote:
This was a very early Gatchaman toy. It came with a vinyl Gatchaman doll and four missiles. The missiles when not in use, attached to his arms and legs. There were two big holes on his chest, where you could insert the missiles. Using a button on his back then fired them. I sure don't remember Ken firing missiles out of his chest on the show!

WTH is Ken doing FIRING MISSILES FROM HIS CHEST??????? What were these toy manufacturers on????

Is this where Austin Powers got their inspiration for the Fembots?

Thanks for the link to the missile shooting Ken doll. Glad I was close to the idea.
