Tim, I have a feeling 'the kid' is supposed to be Ken.
Are those not Ken's striped swim tunks?

So "undeveloped" Ken is comparing himself to "well defined" Joe.

Ahh, that makes sense (if my translation is right). The kid is emphasizing 'what' (it is written in katakana which is like us writing something in italics - in this case at least) and kono (means 'this', that is close to the speaker). Sa = difference. So basically he is asking what's the difference between Joe and himself... or why does Joe have 'pichipichi' and not him.

'kono sa' could also mean 'ko no sa' which would mean 'child of the difference' but I think if that was the case then child (ko) would be written in its kanji form instead of hiragana.

My level of Japanese is still very basic. It is one thing to understand the words but something else to understand the meaning. Japanese and English are so far apart that sometimes concepts don't translate well between the two languages.

This one I'm not 100% on but I think the kid is saying, "Nanda kono sa wa?" = "This difference, what is it?" (I think the kid is jealous because he is young but not in the way Joe is.) Like I said, I'm not sure about this translation.

Oh, honey, you gotta think like a woman. I think there's an additional meaning here on top of what you guys have already explained. Or maybe I'm just more blunt. Big Grin

"The difference, what is it?"

That's easy. He's asking what the difference is between the size of the fish and JOE, if you know what (and where) I mean. Rhetorically. That is, there is no difference. And that's a big fish!

I think there's also a backwards crack at Ken, since the kid looks like a little Ken. (Get it? A little Ken?)

We'd better hide this from Amy... Big Grin

LOL! I thought of the fish symbolism but quickly forgot it as I concentrated on the language instead. But you are right, you have to look at the whole picture and I think the kid is Ken who is expressing his thoughts about his inadequacies (and I don't mean just the size of his danseeki). Basically it is Ken wondering out loud why Joe has more "sex appeal" than he does.

On a technical side of things... men can use 'wa' at the end of a sentence to emphasis one's thoughts (basically it is the same as using 'yo' at the end of the sentence).

Which basically translates to: "I hear that the gentleman's manly lips are sweet (attractive)!!!"

It breaks down like this...

Kun (male/manly)
no (possessive modifier)
kuchibiru (lips)
no (possessive modifier)
kata (gentleman - polite version)
ga (this means the word before it is the subject)
ama (sweet/attractive)
soo desu (I hear it is - at least in this case - it varies depending on the context)
naa (expresses emotion)

Edit: The kanji for kun can also be read as kimi which changes the translation a little bit...

Kimi = you (used by men when talking to close friends, subordinates, or juniors) + no = your

Bwahahaha, Ken even has his red-stripped briefs! He looks so brattish! Maybe he should have been more polite with the Youth Fairy!

Knowing the Japanese's insatiable love for seafood, couldn't the fish in Joe's hand be his lunch? Sashimi (sushi) anyone?

fishing

P.S. I'm only kidding Smile

I just about spit my Oatmeal Crisp all over!

*puts her hands on her hips*

HEY!!!! I am NOT used by men....well at least not as much as I wanna be used...LOL!!!

I used to be a member of the S.C.A.. IIRC I think Maddy is also a member. Kimiko is a japanese name I saw on an album cover that I chose for my japanese character. My friends and I tried to translate it using a japanese/english dictionary...it translated into (depending on where the syllables were divided)...light or silver, virgin or witch...or something like that...
