Is that why most of the group web sites have an extra area where you have to add the letters in the funky box????

Yes its a measure to stop bots as they are known from submitting website forms which mail people. The theory is that a bot cannot read an image therefore it cannot enter the correct letters to bypass the added security.

We utilise it here, though I may add it to all areas at some point Devilgrin

A couple of points about spam:

1) if you post your email online, you will get spam (as mentioned by Cep). As long as the spambots can access the page, they will harvest email addies.

2) Some sites and applications that ask for your email will sell it to a third party. Always check to see what privacy rules are listed on a site or with any applications (programs).

3) In some spam emails, it will have a link to click on to remove you from their mailing list. DO NOT click on that link! Also, do not reply to the spammer directly. All you're doing is telling the spammers that the email address is an active one and you will end up with more spam.

4) Spammers often fake their sender email addy. Just because the email says it is from a certain site doesn't mean it actually came from there.

Here is a good site to check out about Spam and what you can do:

Spam in the place where I live
(ham and pork)
Think about nutrition, wonder what's inside it now
Spam in the place my lunchbox at work
(it's the best)
Really makes a darn good sandwich any way you slice it at all

I have my own domain and most of the spam I get is for addresses that the spammers have invented at the domain, spoofed as the "from" email address, and then that's been picked up by other spammers so they use it as their "to" address on their spam!

Fortunately, it makes it quite easy to filter out, because being invented email addresses I know they're never going to contain anything relevant to me.

I get the same thing. Often I get emails from the "Paratime Team" when I know that is impossible because I am the Paratime Team. Unfortunately, some people I have given email addresses to aren't that computer/internet aware and fell for these spam. I had to tell them that these emails were fake. Man, I hate spam.

I use two spam filters - one on my web mail and one on my Thunderbird email program. If the spam doesn't get caught on the web mail, it usually gets caught on my computer. Course there is always new spam that needs to be flagged. Sometimes I go and check my Spam folders as well to make sure there's no real email in them which sometimes happens.

Tim
