This week's update:

The amount of drainage has increased more, so now I'm going to have the bandages changed more often (3 times a week instead of 2).

Don't freak out over this next bit! I'm going to have a couple of skin grafts applied to the wounds. But these aren't the traditional grafts where skin is removed from a different part of my body; they're going to use artificial skin. (I've had it done before -- it's really cool!) It's a slightly opaque mesh that is placed over the injured area; over the next few weeks, your own skin incorporates itself into the mesh, closing the wound. It takes about a week to grow the mesh, so I should be getting that procedure when I go back to the Wound Center next Thursday.

More drainage is good, right? And if you say the graft is cool, then I'll go cool! It does sound kinda cool. Smile Certainly better than having to have skin removed from somewhere else, which then also has to heal.

In this case, no. The drainage is just a watery discharge that causes the skin to break down more -- basically, it's causing a severe form of diaper rash. If this isn't stopped, I'm at risk for a pretty nasty infection. (I've had a couple of bouts with MRSA thanks to this kind of drainage. That's not as fun as it sounds.)

I'm guessing the skin is macerated, EW? Question

I find it amazing they can grow artificial skin like that in a lab. At least you've had it done before, so you know what to expect. Hopefully the mesh will take and you can finally clear all this up!

Yup. And, ever since I ended up in the chair, it's been so easy for my skin to get that way. (There went my plans to get a full-body tattoo! Damn.)

Meep. Hope they get this all under control. You'll just have to get a most-of-the-body tattoo and make up crazy stories about what WAS in the spots that are later healed up blank!

A woman had been suffering from a head cold for a couple of months. She had been going to her doctor, and he tried everything he could think of, but nothing helped. Finally, he said to her, “When you go home, I want you to stand outside in the rain until you’re chilled to the bone. And then take your time when you go inside to dry off.”

“Will that cure my cold, Doctor?” she asked.

“No,” he replied, “you’ll get pneumonia. But THAT I can cure!”

Today’s trip to the Wound Center reminded me of that story from an old Irish joke book my mom had. I’m still having problems with massive drainage – the skin grafts worked, but I had a bunch of new leaks spring up in areas not covered by the grafts. (Bah...that sounds about right!) Dr. Mehmood is going to try a special type of bandaging that’s available to dermatologists (I can’t remember what it’s called); it’s supposedly made specifically to dry up especially weepy skin conditions. If this doesn’t work, I’m getting bounced to another doctor because Mehmood is officially out of ideas.

This hasn’t put me in a very good mood. I’ve been dragging myself to the Wound Center so long that I wouldn’t be surprised if my mail started getting sent there. Frown

I'm so sorry, EW. Hopefully this new attempt will work! At least your specialist is willing to admit that it might be time for fresh eyes.

EW. I'm so sorry to hear that. Bad physical condition would lead to mental sufferings too especially there is nothing can do except just waiting, I hope you would get over with it. (I wonder if it is OK to ask you how did your leg get hurt...)

I don't mind questions -- it's one of the best ways to learn!

Anyway, I had a leg brace that rubbed the skin the wrong way and caused a couple of stubborn wounds to open. (Not a thrilling story, but it's what happened.)

Sorry you are having such a hard time EW. My neighbor had a similar problem with an open wound on her foot that wouldn't heal. They finally tried hyperbaric treatments and that worked for her. Don't know if that's an option you could consider or not. I had never heard of hyperbaric therapy used for wound treatment before.
