--- Gatchaman Crowds (http://www.gatchamania.net/threadid.php?threadid=4278)
The Gatch OAV doesn't look much like Gatchaman either, to me. I have a real problem watching it, because I can't get used to Joe... not looking (or, often, acting) much like Joe. This Gatchaman Crowds, at least, wiould get around that issue for me by having all new characters, I suppose.
At the end of day, if the characters in it evoke aspects of the original Science Ninjas (nuanced, non-cardboard-cliche personalities that experience character development and interact believably while beings heroes who are less than perfect but keep trying) and if the stories are good (important!), then I could see myself liking Gatchaman Crowds on its own merit. I mean, there's plenty of other animes besides Gatchaman that I like. But it is hard to see something with "Gatchaman" in the title bear so little resemblance to the original.
On the subject of the Star Trek reboot, this Audi commerical is pretty funny!

I know there are folks that like the Gatch OAV but it makes me twitchy. They dumped some really important background stuff from Ken and Joe, making them more generic, and BOTH of their restylings gross me out. No offense to those who like them, it's just not my preference.
The Gatch movie looks like it's keeping more true to the core and is more of a "reboot." Gatchaman Crowds, as advertised so far (which is obviously just a tiny shallow peak at what they're planning), sounds like a generic "schoolgirl kicks butt" anime with a 1% smattering of pieces of Gatch. That's what annoys the crud out of me. I agree with the thought that someone probably was getting the show ready and later someone decided to tack Gatch onto it as a recognizable term.
I'm also really, really hoping they prove me wrong.

It's funny with the OAV, I can tolerate the changes they made with Joe more than I can the ones they made with Ken or the others. I'm not sure I'd say they changed the characters too much (outside of appearances), it's more like they gutted them. They are worse than generic, they are flat. Jun, Jinpei, and Ryu are almost non-characters.
I can watch it, because some of the animation is good. I do own it, thinking it might be a good way to get my oldest interested in it. My younger two, like to laugh at it with me.
I do like the ambiguity of the ending (something like what I imagine the ending of F is like, I can't really compare, as I have yet to see F), and do with they'd either left it like that, instead of trying to tie up loose ends in the ending credits.

Perspective Alters Reality
I have to wonder about why did the people at Tatsunoko decide to make this particular anime and what type of audience is it aimed at. If its for teens, then why would they stick the name of a forty years old show to the title? (and judging by the amount of fanart on Pixiv, I don't think the fanbase is particularly big in Japan) If they wanted to attract fans of actual Gatchaman, then why make such drastic changes to the universe that seem to go way beyond a simple reboot? Maybe at some point the series will connect to the old 'verse after all. I suppose all we can do is wait and see. Well, no matter what the outcome, I'm still planning to watch it; along with three or four other shows.
...and Springie, Tengu, KT1972, thanks a lot for your congratulations. I am very happy you like my works. I've already spent about 3 hours painting yesterday.
