I grew up in FL. Hurricanes are a huge pain in the butt. And while you see them coming, you never know exactly where they're going to hit, so there's all this panic and freaking out and then nothing ... or everything ... That makes them somewhat similar to tornados since they don't follow a predictable path either, but the wait to see what's going to happen is longer as you have more warning.

Fortunately I've never been present for a tornado. I have for hurricanes. When they start blowing down palm trees, which evolved for tropical storms, that's my rule for when I get nervous. Smile

Where I live we've felt the occasional earthquake, but just barely. We've felt ones from Alaska or Seattle but don't seem to get them with an epicentre around here. I love the moderate climate here and that goes for storms too. Supposedly my area is also protected from tsunami because of the massive mountains to the west of Vancouver Island. They'd block the wall of water. I try not to get too over-confident, though.

Plus, I live very near a (long since) dormant volcano! Woo! And BC is rainforest, which means that it builds up lots and lots of tinder, and has cycles where eventually we get a hot, dry summer and then burn baby burn! Clears out the forest floor. And towns.

I'm not sure there's a truly safe place in the world. All areas are subject to numerous types of natural disasters. It's amazing, some of the areas of North America you don't even realize are on fault lines. Nature is both beautiful and terrible, truly awesome in the original sense of the word (to be viewed with awe).

Miraculously, nobody was hurt!

I heard about that. Anyplace can have a tornado. Hawai'i had one this past week as well. It started as a water spout and came on land for a few minutes.

I hadn't heard about the Hawaii one, but California's had a few. We get a lot of dust devil's, but we've got a few that are strong enough to move fences and out buildings.

Yikes, doesn't ears popping mean a tornado is near/likely? Keep safe!

No, my ears tend to pop whenever we have some seriously severe weather moving in the area.

These storms came on quick, and our area made it through a-ok..although the neighborhoods south of us had a larger nastier system plow through.

We have a basement, and I was keeping an eye on the radar. Our backyard flooded in a matter of minutes.

Are you in Ohio, k2p2?

I was talking to my sister (who lives near Cleveland) earlier today, and she had some bad weather coming in...

Hope no flooding got into your house!

I hope everything calms down there! It's been one horrendously strange winter, and I'm sure we could all use a break.

Yes, we are fine. Our backyard flooded into a river that went all down the block, (I have pictures if I ever get them uploaded to Photobucket)

What was the most impressive was the incredible lightenng. You did not want to be outside at all during that! Our neighbors tree got it hit, the ensuing exploshion of bark, leaves an branches she thought might have broken a double paned window.

Were our friends live, a house got hit and caught fire. and one in our neighborhood had a massive hole blown through it before ignighting.

Sitting in my living room near the bay window, you could not only see the flashes, you could hear and feel them. It hisses on the way down like the sound of fabric tearing.
