Since my sight has gotten worse and probably get even more worse, I will havbe to start buying audio books, either download them or CDs, since I won't be able to my books, but the problem with listening to them on my iPod, is that I might get distracted by both the scenery and trying to remember to get off at my stop and listening to an exciting part of the audio book.
However, I do listen to my music when I am out and about to and from work, going to my parents or shopping.
I wouldn't mind buying a car like those in The Minority Report or I Robot films, where they can be drive themselves or you can drive them, as they are far cleaner and if you are using a phone, shaver, eating or anything else, you can just let the computer drive and if you are visually disabled, then you can do the same thing.

Like the one in The Mysterious Mechanized Jungle? While I can see your point, especially for those with visual challenges, those cars creep me out. But then again, I am a control freak behind the wheel and don't even use cruise control unless I'm planning on spending three hours on the same road with no traffic (In California, yea, right).

Actually, I've been considering trying to get some audio books on CDs, to listen to while I'm driving on long, dull stretches of uncrowded Midwestern highway. I keep meaning to check if the library has any, but I haven't done it yet...

Most libraries have at least a small selection or access to them through inter-library connections. I survived teaching Huck Finn with an extreme head cold turned sinus infection with 1 hour morning commute and 90 minute evening commute thanks to the audio book and made (shh) illegal copies for my resource students, but they had to provide the cds for me.

Here, here, Met! ITA with you! A car that drives itself would be a blessing to those with vision limitations. The technology is there - or at least starting to come along a bit more - but, unfortunately, it is going to be a while until driverless cars are deemed safe and for public consumption.
Books on tape are a great option for long drives or commutes. I've never used them for that purpose, but my sister has (she had an hour commute each way to her job) and she loved them. Most libraries carry books on tape/CD's nowadays. They also now have what are called "PlayAways" (kinda like an iPod or MP3 player with a book preloaded), or you can get downloadable audiobooks from your library's website.
Ok, sorry... Sometimes that Former Library-Person geekiness still comes out in me. I just need to beat it back into submission.

As a driver I hate the jay walkers who suddenly throw themselves in front of your car. Whenever I see them on the side walk I slow down and keep my eyes on them lest there might be a sucidal one. These people have no self-preservation.
Yesterday a dog crossed the street on the zebra. Of course I stopped the car and give the animal it's right of way. Several meters ahaed a stupid teenage girl jumped on the road bed while talking at the phone. She didn't see my car at 2 meter from her since she was facing the opposite direction. I nearly killed the brakes to dodge her. And then she stopped in the middle of the road staring at me. I hate when people do this!
New driving legislation says that drivers who hit jay walkers are extempted from fault and they can ask recovery of damages from the responsable walker!
Adding this to their irresponsibility almost makes you want to ram your car in them!!!

I was once going to do so when I came to a crossroad and where do you think were two ladies chatting their hearts out?! Just in the middle of it as if they had all the reason of the world to do so! Obviously, I had to stop ... and they kept on chatting! I then pressed my foot on the speed pedal whilst still at a halt to startle them on purpose! It worked as they decided to move on protesting even if they were doing the wrong thing! I sometimes don't know how these kind of people's mind work!

In case the Californians missed the local news yesterday, Maria Shriver (our first lady) got caught in the act...

Ooh, busted!
I'm pretty certain Joe's been shown talking on his bracelet while driving his car -I wonder if that would be considered a violation of no-cell-phone-while-driving laws -not that any cop would likely ever manage to pull him over and ticket him!
Posted by Transmute Jun on 14-10-2009 at 18:41:
Well, in Joe's case, his device is 'hands free', which is allowed under California law!

I saw that too, LB. I guess being Kennedy allows one to get away things that the rest of us normal people can't. Yes, I do blame it on her being a Kennedy, as I do believe that given the Governator's current popularity she'd have been busted with bragging rights by most any one in law enforcement.

I have seen people in Wolverhampton when I am waiting for the lights to change so I can cross safely just cross the road without a care and when they actually NOTICE any traffic, they do a quick jog and sometimes I see someone not only crossing the road, safely or not, he then starts to walk ALONG the curb on the road until he crosses another road, and though there's not any traffic at about 6.40 am, sometimes there is a car that goes past him.
I do try to gauge, how far the traffic is before running across the road during the day. When it's dark, either in the early morning or at night, then i just wait until the little green man comes on to tell me to cross the road.
You will always get idiot drivers and idot pedestraians and even stupider cyclists on the pavements.
