I think Imagi must be confused... They have an image of Jinpei crawling through a window and tag it as being "gatchaman"

Unless Ken's suddenly wearing Jinpei's uniform also ... They need to really look into the team a little more.

Why? because they do not need to sell this movie to us the fans now. They need to sell it to the new YOUNG fans, as you say, and the new fans will not want the 70's or 80's style. They want the 90's or perhaps even the 2000 style.
We will have to be the ones to adjust not them for the movie to be successful.

That is JMO though, I just hope IMAGI do not make ME/US have to adjust TOO much.

That was my first impression too... I hope they do some touch ups on his face just to darken him a little in his character. (He's still hot...)

They can still sell a rugged Condor image to the younger fans. Not all girls like the boy band look to a guy.

i just think this updated look strays too far from the way they looked before.... the original gatchaman costume isnt that bad or that outdated looking... couldnt they maybe, i dont know, update it a tad, like the OAVs or OVAs or whatever, they still looked like the costumes just shinier and a bit "edgier"

now their style without the costume on, yeah thats DEFINATLY outdated! lol bell-bottoms and penny loafers, and that hair... (of course it seems to come back every once and a while)

i just dont know, i guess im just worried that they are going to change thigns TOO much

Well I have been looking at it as Jairen said. Very early on in all this movie talk, I recall mention that this movie was to be pre TV series (the teams childhood?) Not sure if that is still the plan.

If it is still true, then this may be Joe at age 14-16, rather than 18- early 20's, then he would not have such a rough, rugged look (yet). Yes he might still be angry at the world, and we might see that anger in his personality, but in their early teens boys still have that "babyish" look.

Or am I way off base on this thought?

Actually it makes a lot of sense. If the film's story is meant to be an "origins" or prequel story, then they would have to look at least somewhat younger.

I've often thought that Joe's face was a little... less distinctively Joe-like (maybe even "softer") in the early episodes, but it's also seemed to me that, even later in the first series, his appearance varied sometimes from ep to ep, as if different artists were drawing him slightly differently.

(clearly I've spent too much time staring at Joe's face in all the episodes...)

Well in some cultures girls start maturing at 10. Not that I am saying that Jun is of that culture (Japanese, if they stick with what we know, tend to mature later) but just that there are some.

I have taught 6/7 year olds for about 6 years and occasionally (twice i think it was) I will have a girl who is already starting to get the BO you associate with a teen. Then you have to sit down with the child and parent and delicately mention cleanliness practices.

I've noticed that as well LB, but like you, Joe's parts tend to hold my **cough** attention more.

Very much so, one scene I could pause on forever is in episode 104 (I think) where he looks at the goon and threatens him. Makes my heart go flippity flop.... and I get all giddy... my B/H thinks I'm nuts when I do that!

Thought this might be of interest. This is the cover for the 2006/2007 Imagi Annual Report.

Now, obviously I would expect these to be early, early renders of the characters, sort of "concept", but you can see Ken on the top left, Ryu in the bottom right (I'm loving the harder look for him btw), and Jun on the bottom left (not sure about her at all, hope they improve that!)

Of course, the concept art in the centre looks spectacular!

There's a scene with Joe in a different ep, with a close up of his face that I always pause and stare at...

Eventually I made a drawing based on it, which was a bit tedious because I had to keep pulling out the disc and going back to that particular scene everytime I wanted to work on the sketch!
