Ugh dial up... I remember those days... Now I'm spoiled with DSL lol...

We used to live in a small town, and in our neighborhood the only option WAS dial-up. No cable, and for whatever reason they couldn't get us DSL. It was major big time no fun to go to a busy Web site and sit there . . . and sit there . . . and sit there

My parents live 10 minutes outside of a large town. They only have the option of dial up, no company supplies any other means, at this time.
So I would not say they live in a "rustic area", it is just cable and DSL do not cater to those who live out side of high populous areas, but they are working on it.
It goes to show what we now think of as a need these days. 5 - 10 years ago people were very happy on dial up. Think where we will be in another 5 - 10 years.

Well, we were in Ridgecrest, which is about seventy miles north of Palmdale, two hours east of Bakersfield, and in the middle of a heck of a lot of sand. It's a town that wouldn't exist if it weren't for the military weapons testing base that is right next door.
Beautiful, beautiful area. Incredible mountains, clean air, wildlife everywhere, and sunsets that would knock your socks off. But not a good place to live if you want the conveniences of civilization. They had DSL and cable within the town limits, but any of the "outlying" neighborhoods (not very outlying--we were less than two miles from city limits) were out of luck. Currently the town's major clothing supplier is Wal-Mart (Mervyn's closure has hurt there).

Yup, right in the middle of the Mojave desert. And it's funny about the DSL: There was absolutely no way that we could get it for several years. Too much trouble for the supplier. "Impractical to install on our street." (Didn't stop them from constantly sending us ads!) And then, a couple of months before we were scheduled to move to Sacramento, all of a sudden they started offering it for our street. For a high price, of course. We didn't bother--we knew we could get good high-speed Internet up here without a problem, and weren't going to sign onto a year-long contract that we wouldn't use ten months of.
We had the same problem, Barrwing, and we're in the middle of a 'civilized' area! We moved into our house when it was 2 years old, and they were building a lot of other new developments down the street. But they hadn't extended the DSL and cable modem service out to us. Part of the problem is that we're no the Bay so the 'closest' DSL routers to us were across the Bay. So we had dial-up for about a year.... LIVING RIGHT NEXT TO SILICON VALLEY! Can you believe it?
But once DSL became available, we went with it and never looked back. I think they have cable modem service now, but since we don't have cable TV, that becomes awfully expensive (they like to bundle it).

I waited for a long time before DSL came to my "village". When it did it still took them forever to get to my apartment. When I moved in with my B/H (only 3 blocks away) I had to go with cable cause DSL wouldn't expand the three blocks. Ohh the headaches!
