The power of music

We all know how much songs can affect us at times. When we are down it lifts us or when you are watching a programme or movie the right piece of music can make you remember that scene or the image being portrayed.

What was the last piece of music to leave such an impact on you?

A piece that really helped me through a tough time was one that I learned to play on the organ. It's called Elegie and is written by Flor Peeters. It is rumored that he wrote it the night after his mother died, and whether or not that is true, it *was* written shortly thereafter. Through it, he deals with her death by building up the tragic theme more and more to a peak and then bringing it back down. The pedal line is one note repeated and sounds eerily like sobbing. He finishes the piece with a theme borrowed from the Requiem mass, signifying his acceptance of her death. I had heard it before and decided to learn it after my grandmother died this past summer. Whenever I felt depressed because of it, I'd play the song, and it gradually helped me come to terms as well, because you can't learn the song without also learning the sweet melody at the end.

Anyways, music is definitely a powerful force. Perhaps not as powerful as Macross/ Robotech portray it to be, but it definitely contains power in other areas.

For me its different pieces of music.

Edelweiss from the sound of music when they were getting ready to escape near the end.

The theme from magnificent seven as the ride off to help the village.

More recently Then you look at me from bicentennial man

The list for me is endless as music tends to have a big impact for me.

Elvin, read up the history of Rodrigues's Concerto de Aranjuez. I think it'll strike a chord, even if the instrument's different.

Me, I tend to like silence. I used to study to music, and a sure sign of a good exam was hearing the music as I wrote, but after working in an office next to the factory floor where and now down here with a noisy computer, I just can't hear the music well enough to enjoy it without concentrating on it, to the exclusion of what I'm doing. So I'm out of the habit.

I know I used to be affected, and sometimes a stray song would take me out of whatever I was doing and give me a glorious little holiday, but not any more.

Back at age 12, playing clarinet, I used to play myself out of a bad mood by starting with music that suited it, and then realizing I was ready for something sprightlier. Then I got the teacher from ... We learned more in one month with our grade eight teacher than his other classes learned in an entire year -- seriously, it was a mixed class -- those of us with two years of band from grade school, and the grade 10s who started with him. One of the older kids couldn't do a concert Bb-major scale on a trumpet -- didn't even know what note to start on.

Ooops, that was a mini-rant. Sorry.

Anyhoo, silence seems the thing at the moment.

*writes Concerto title down*

Thanks for the tip. ^_^ I hear you on the problem of high-school band teachers. Some are very good at playing the instrument, but teaching someone else is a whole new ballpark. I fear next year. I'm going to have to teach kids in a summer organ camp. Scary.

Definitely, though I'll still keep my swords around for sepukku, just in case. Wink Fortunately, it's only a week, and it isn't until the summer after this one...but it still frightens me sometimes. ^_^

I had grand ideas of making the 25 post thing tonight, but I can see I am out of shape and have no stamina left in me...this is hard work!

Ugh...am going for a lie down and a beer...hmm..probably a beer first and then a lie down actually...would make more sense wouldn;t it? Unless there is someone out there who can drink and lie down at the same time?

Drive's a vet. Unless I'm mis-reading, he's exempt, or can count his posts on the old board.
