How does one go from 'Exhalted Member' to 'Boardie'. I feel like I've been knocked down a couple of notches and the wind has been taken out of my sails...

You would need to go to the FAQ and then onto the What Are Rank, etc, section and that will give you all the detail, like shown below:-
