Virgina tech
Perhaps Im posting this in the wrong section. I just want to acnkowledge what happened At Virgina Tech. Its been on the news all day. As a Mum, an educator , a fellow human being , I just want to extend my condolences and prayers to the victims and their families and friends affected by the shootings that occured yesterday.
I feel too heartsick, bewildered and shocked to even start getting mad let alone start making sense of such a sensless murder of 33 people at the University. Im far too aware of the ironic coincidence of this occuring on the anniversary of the Colombine tragedy.
right now I feel too deeply for those families who are being notified of their loved ones murder to even consider why Campus wasnt put on lockdown , if the two inceidents are related and the while gun debate issue.
Why oh why is there so much fucking anger and zero ability to cope with ones problems in today's youth and society?
Those poor traumatised students, the community of Blacksburgh and the victims they shall mourn today at the Memorial service being held today , are in my prayers.
Today we grieve, I dont give a shit about the dickhead who sought fit to kill 32 of his fellow Uni students and professors as a way to solve his probs.
Tomorrow we can ask questions , then the anger can begin.

In America, there are shootings and in Britian there are drive by shootings and stabbings at schools.
I hate to say it again but I will, the world is getting worse by the minute and if this is sainty, then I am glad that I am mad.
Besides, if mad people get hold of guns this easy and go around killing either kids or uni students, then maybe the gun laws in America should be changed somehow.

I live in Virginia, about 4 hours away from the shootings, but this really affected everyone here. Many people I know have children or know someone who went to college at Va. Tech. It's so sad...I can't imagine what would drive someone to commit such a horrible crime.

You just made me goosepimple all over. I didnt realise you live in Virginia.
I recall past times in here, with so many of us spread all over the world , where we would check up on each other when there was some horrible event. 911 was a traumatising time as were the London bombings which had affected Firebird deeply.
My mind actually flew to Elvin who if I recall correctly went to Uni , just wasnt sure where in America.
I wish you strength to help morally support those people you know who are already stressed about family and friends attending VT. From the news reports, it sounds like a very strong and close knit community .
take encouragement from Metaliants attitude:

Elvin graduated, think it was a year ago, before she dropped out of sight.
My heart goes out to all those affected.
I was in uni, a woman, in engineering at Waterloo when the Montreal Massacre happened. Every year when I renew my license, I check off the "donation to Memorial Foundation" box. And my lab partners and I marched for Tienaman. Very moving.
From what I've read, that kid was sending out signals left, right and centre. Some even caught them; he spent time in counseling. But it's just too horrific to actually mark down "serious threat" on the forms.

Or even worse why no one really heeded those pshychological warning signs coming off him in waves!
Why dont we just listen to our internal alarm bells that make us feel someone or a situation "feels" kinda off or not quite right?

I wish the Media would not play videos or show pictures of this twat's thoughts and build up to the shooting, its just giving him exactly what he wanted, everyone's attention on him.

Exactly!!! then again, WHen have you known the media to be sensitive , caring, and subtle in its delivery of the news?

They should really introduce a law that prevents material like his being made public, I know the freedom of information act yada yada yada but I think giving this stain on life the platform to reach the world is completely ridiculous and not only that but will more then likely spur other scum to do exactly the same.
In fact it is believed that this premeditated act which fell on the anniversary of a previous school massacre was deliberately planned to get the biggest body count possible
And why do we suppose that is!! Because the damn media parade these evil people and their ideas to the world!

Agreed. Show enough to convince folks that the system didn't work, both with the kid and on the day, so they do look into changes, and then lay off.
I know it's said that shared joy increases and shared sorrow divides, but that's among friends, not total strangers. A prayer or two from me will help them, but beating me over the head with it?
How are we to teach our kids the world's a basically good place? Yes, take precautions, but if everyone hides just in case, the only ones out there will be the nutjobs.

Exactly Cricker's hun, the world is a lot nicer than the media portrays it and as for people like him and their ideas

If you are saying Cep that they shouldn't show videos like his because that's what they wanted, I would agree with you BUT I have seen a hell a lot of violence, both fictional and factual since I was a kid but that won't stop people causing voilence I am afraid.
Also I would agree on the point that NOW we have heard that people were starting to think he was a bit loopy, especially teachers who tried to warn the police who didn't seem to do anything AND when he went into a gun shop and had to fill in the form, the question "Are you Mentally ill" or something similar popped up and he ticked No or something then he got his gun and ammo.
AND I heard somebody saying that if the rest of the students were armed, then he would have been shot, which I think is a bit daft as they could have been more students like him and therefore more people killed.
Also why do people seem shocked about this when they live in a country (no offence guys) where guns are available everywhere INCLUDING a supermarket.
Last year about this time, I had an email from a friend's sister who was worried about her because she seemed to have disappeared. She was living quite happily on the Easten coast of the US but it seems that she's disappeared. I haven't heard from anybody about whether she's still alive or dead but after what happened at the universtiy, then I am thinking that some crazy person with a gun could have shot her. A bit daft I know but it's a bit worrying.
