Hmm...might be one to check out. Isn't there a live action movie version coming out in a couple of weeks (here in America, anyways)?

I assume Sir (? but she's female) Integra Hellsing would count Van Helsing as an ancestor. I've never seen this series but it does look interesting.

The screencaps look like it's either contemporary alternate universe or futuristic occult sci-fi. I am very curious about one of the episodes because it's set in the city I grew up in, which doesn't get featured as a location very often. So, I'm wondering what the Japanese will have made of it, whether it'll have a familiar skyline or whether it'll be a generic english location with people wearing hobnail boots and flat caps and walking their whippets and saying something equivalent to "gor blimey strike a light aarrrrrgh a vampire!" Smile

After all, the Gatch 2 version of Stonehenge, which wouldn't have been difficult to find reference pictures for, bore precious little resemblance to the real one.

Surely the place is a bit landlocked for mighty black flagged galleons?

Some people are so stupid they can do anything. They believe that this is accomplished through something called "willpower." It's quite an amazing study. Big Grin

[Well, we enjoyed it. Almost didn't see it, based on the bad reviews here, but adjusted our expectations accordingly (nothing to do with the original, or what the original drew from, and feel free to laugh at the most serious moments), and we enjoyed it.]

oops, wrong Helsing piece. Pardon me while I move this over to the live-action section of the board.

Hellsing the anime is based on the manga of the same name and runs for a satisfying 13 episodes. If I recall correctly, this is another Gonzo production so you can expect quality.

Both have proven popular in Japan (as usual, the manga more so).

I highly recommend it. It has nothing to do with Van Helsing (the only reference to it is that Sir Integra, who is female by the way, is a direct descendent). Hunting vampires runs in the family.

Alucard (Dracula spelled backwards for anyone who cares about such things) is your main man *ahem* vampire and along with an SAS style outfit, Sir Integra and her chaming vampiric Butler, it's his job and duty to wipe all vampires and gouls off the face of the planet.

He does this well enough; lots of blood, guts and enough interrupted sex between species to make your eyes pop out.

It's humourous, it's violent, it's campy, it's theatrical; the Americans try in vein to imitate an English accent with hilarious (often horrifying) results; Alucard is sexy without actually being good looking and there are lots of pinky/magenta sunsets to make anyone actually living in England snort and chuckle with ironic mirth (yeah, sure we get magenta sunsets every day over here...no problems).

The best part of this series is its soundtrack!! Absolutely rocking, awesome 70's glam, keyboard/guitar melodies with a touch of funky jazz...I've already had people asking about it when playing it at parties! Big Grin Big Grin

GO GEDDIT!!! Tongue
