Wheee!!!
Congratulations to Crackers Schoen!
This weekend, he officially read more pages to himself than we read to him, in a book that I'd thought had too many unknown words. And he filled me in on the details I'd missed when I picked it up to read to him at bedtime and saw the bookmark moved, so I know he understood it.
Wheee!!!!

Huzzah! It's so great to see little ones taking such big steps. ^_^

I can't get my daughter to read by herself much yet. I suspect the television and computer provide too many distractions, and I really should be a responsible parent and do something about that. But sometimes when my husband is putting her to bed, he'll get her to read a bit of whatever book he's reading. And I'm always very impressed with how many of the words she can get right, as long as she's in the mood to concentrate.
We had an exciting new book arrive today, a trilogy of Animak Ark stories by Lucy Daniels. The audibooks of these are her current favourite monthly acquisition from the library. The books, while short in pictures, have large print, so I'm hoping she will be interested enough to read some by herself.

Yesterday, it was reported that 16 million people in Britain have the reading age of children and these people are adults. Shock, horror.
Also 18 million people can't read or write properly either.

My last paid job, over half the hourly employees couldn't read or write at high school level. It took a while for me to learn not to say, "Write down the details for me." They had all sorts of ways to avoid it, and when they did have to write something, some of them had very, very neat handwriting; they never wrote enough to develop messy handwriting. Some of them were very intelligent, and I didn't suspect a thing till someone pointed it out.
We always read to him at bedtime. Once he was able to read a bit, we'd read one chapter, then he'd have to read a bit in order to get us to read the next. The amount would vary with book difficulty and his reading level.
Television and computer tie-ins are great (although catalogues bring their own problems). They'll tackle big words, if it's their favourite character saying it. And a lot of the big words are names or favourite sayings, which they already know from the show.

Have you read a book called The Dictionary. Story is non-existant but at least it explains what the words mean. Lol
